while pirates and piracy does make me sick, i find that this ruling is very bad for privacy and freedom.
if the people we pay for services from can't keep our information privatized and safe, then who will?
for the first time in a while, i am in agreement with verizon on something. it is appalling that ANY ogranization, Gov. or not would infringe on the public interest over a few bucks.
as illegal as pirating music is, the fact remains this guy wasn't selling the files, he wasn't charging people to listen to them, there was no money being made at all...he/she downloaded 600 songs they like, for private use in their own home.
never once was commerce actually imposed on.
this is a victory for an evil and controlling lobbiest, the RIAA, and signifies another loss of civil ilberty and national freedom that most citizens take for granted.
my friend and i have discussed this before, the only true resolution to the current state of american civilization is complete revolution.
it is scary to think about, but it is the only way to take any control and power back from the government and the corporate lobby. a unification of the mass public, tearing down both the digital and physical infrastructure and barriers placed in front of us by these organizations.
maybe one day the mass public will actually realize how fucked we are.

one idea we had was to set up 'roaming' pirate servers for web radio/streaming.
something that couldn't easily be pinned down or tracked on the net, but that people could access with special p2p software and listen to music freely.
highly illegal though, because you're supposed to pay 3 or more licensing agencies for music rights.
i know, i work for a company that owns 7 radio stations.
our second idea was along the same lines but it would be a privatized internet. small pockets of servers, not aligned with any certain provider/isp or backbone - but instead relied on p2p communication and custom browsers to display web sites and such.

i don't get how the RIAA or however knows that the 600 songs downloaded are copyrighted?
by the titles? id3 tags? or they download the music off him and make sure that it's copyright material
if it's the latter aren't they breaking the law as well -?
i know chances are that buddy was downloading copyright material but just because I have an mp3 labelled Prince or even Purple Rain - doesn't mean it's the actual Prince file
am i making any sense - how can they prove he's downloaded illegal mp3's - without downloading them themselves
or is okay to download illegal mp3s in order to prosecute someone??
??

the RIAA tried to pass a bill a while back that would ok it for them to hack into users personal computers to see what they were doing illegally.
it also gave them power to delete, destroy or edit any "illegal copies of protected works" on a users system without notifying the user about this.
oh, and if they fucked your system, too bad.
could you imagine the ramifications of such power for certain organizations?
the only thing that i hate more than software crackers, warez kiddies and pirates is the fucking MPAA, RIAA and the politicians whom don't know a PC from a hair on their ass.
we need young geeks in congress to change this world for the better.

What's next?
Invade your house in the middle of the night and destroy your CD-R's?

that would never happen... if it did you'd see a revolution within a week.

Originally this post contained a smart-alex, sarcastic point directed at the RIAA. We disagreed with AD's point of view. Simple as that.
