i've been using photoshop for a while, so i can believe i never encountered this before but....
what is the opposite of a bevel? its not emboss is it? here's the thing, i want to have a large rectangle rectangle, and then have the shape of a smaller rectangle that looks like its sinking within the large rectangle....is this still reffered to as beveling? if not, what is this called, and HOW DO I DO IT??? i can't believe i never encountered this before...im using photoshop 6.

sorry man, dumb question, play with it and you will find out, you aren't going to get many answers here for that. :)

try the Leveb filter

its a serious question though. i never used photoshop as an interface device...so i just need to make something imprint into an object...i've always done bevels as something that is above level, never below level if that makes sense. but if youd rather mock me, thats cool too.
ive played with all the angles, and the up/down/pillow emboss options....
ez.

I'm guessing your using 6 or 7. If you go to the bevel option youll notice that there are two radio buttons, one for up and one for down, select the down one and your ready to go.
I think that's what you wanted.

yes i am 6/7 and no that's not the effect i wanted, i tried that already.
but its cool, i expected this kind of ish in among some elitist folk. its like going to a calculus forum and asking what a derivative is when you've been specializing in geometry your whole life. its possible to use photshop for a thousand things and not use one of its primary functions. bleh.

Er I don't understand what you're trying to do if you've used all the options. Emboss is the opposite to bevel insn't it? Upload your pic to the web and i'll have a look if you like.

I would guess the opposite if Emboss is Engrave?
I know there is no such thing in Photoshop, but tinkering with the Layer effects to make the 'light' come from the opposite direction would prolly do the trick.

ooh I'm touchy - touch you ooh! bidibooh
If you want to get more precise results you need to use the ol' fashioned method of copying channels and nudging them down and left and then extracting one from another and all that shit I forgot because I never need it.
Try a photoshop wow book from like version 4 or something - its gotta be in there.

create a new layer above the interior rectangle. hit (d) to reset the color palette to b&w default colors. select the line tool, turn off anti-aliasing and draw a 1 pixel border along the left and top edges of the interior rectangle.
hit (x) to swap colors and draw a white 1 pixel border along the right and bottom edges of the interior rectangle.
adjust the opacity of the layer to set the depth of the inset.
wallah.

thanks for the suggestions, all im trying to do is imagine you have a bed. now you put a heavy book on the bed so that part of the bed goes lower. remove the book. now look at the bed from above. that's what im trying to acheive. i've played with all the effects in bevel/emboss and didnt get the results i wanted, which is why i thought i should be using another tool.
about the playing with channels thing, i never did that before, one those things i gotta learn as well! but thanks.

you can also slightly blur the layer you created to give it a beveled effect
play with it
- unknown0
the channels method is definately what you need because the reult is created using your image so it keeps more 'reality'. Sorry but I haven't used that technique for a looong time and really cant remember - but its out there somewhere. This is how it was done before they added the layer styles.

I've always been able to get what I need with the bevel tool and playing with the size, depth, and softness while having down selected. I used it a bunch when I used to make porn sites.
I don't know what kind of effect your going for but if your just looking to have something pressed into the page it should work fine, it's not like it has much of a chance of looking 'cool' anyway. in my opinion anyway.
- gabe0
did you try the method i mentioned alien?
- aliendn0
Gabe, thanks a phuckn million man! what i should have asked is how to do it manually in the first place, i dont know why, but its a better tweak when you do it manually...much respect holmes, thanks again.
- gabe0
hah, cool, no problem
