I've always been able to get what I need with the bevel tool and playing with the size, depth, and softness while having down selected. I used it a bunch when I used to make porn sites.
I don't know what kind of effect your going for but if your just looking to have something pressed into the page it should work fine, it's not like it has much of a chance of looking 'cool' anyway. in my opinion anyway.
