I am spec'in out a new desktop for work and I need your opinions.
I'm going to get a Dell, but I'm wondering whether or not to go with the Dual Zeon 2.4ghz or the P4 3ghz?
Both with a gig of ram, dual monitor video card (64mb) and maybe a scsi drive.
Anyone have experience with the zeon's?
Thanks.

sorry dude, i can't help you out. don't know much about pcs... someone here will. but, from what i remember... isn't a zeon processor much cheaper than the p4? if so i'd opt for that. that's just me though. good luck. sounds like it's going to be a bitchen system either way.

uh... are you running a web server? why do need xeon?
just go p4 and you'll be just fine.

p4

That's what I was wondering.... this is going to be a graphics workstation. Mostly photoshop and web development.
The Zeon's are the only one's that they offer as dual processor's and I've heard they're good with graphics.
But are they better than a P4 3ghz with the new hyperthreading?
That is the question we must ponder.
On a side note.... anyone here in the Las Vegas area... and are you looking for a web designer
:-)

get the p4.

i dunno.....whether it is a dual p4 or a dual xeon, a dual will be better. It will probably seem faster then with just a single proccessor. Also, check and see which one has a higher cach, because that will have a great effect on preformance. Alot of memory also helps =-)

i have a 486 i'll sell ya. real cheap.
- k0na_an0k0
oh, i forgot to tell ya thing thing friggin smokes.
... no really, when i plug it in and turn it on it smokes.

It doesn't look like Dell loads up the Zeon's with too much cache... 512k.
And it's a single P4, they don't offer dual P4's. Just dual Zeon's.
I'll probably just go with the P4, the word Zeon sounds kinda dumb anyway. As if I'm from the planet Zoltar and I wear a Zoot suit and use a computer called a Zeon.

Well, first off everyone it's XEON, no Z anywhere around.
Dual's are particularly useful for rendering and very intensive graphics, but for Photoshop and illustrator, it won't make that much difference. I have a dual XEON 2.2 and it rocks. I use my old pIII 933 for web and PS work.
I would go with the P4, get a GIG of ram, fast hard drive and a good graphic card. Oh, there is a difference between the Geforce cards aimed at gaming (on the P4) and the professional cards found on the Xeon workstations, like the Quadro series. I don't think you'd need the professional cards, the GeForce or ATI 9700 would be fine.
Get yourself at least the 21" Trinitron (just got a new one and it is beautiful!). Go for the 24" Sony, if money isn't an object.

Is the scsi hard drive really useful, compared to the price of the drives and their speed ??? Do you want to use it for RAID or what ? (you can even do it with IDE)
Just check the prices out.

I would have to agree with mbr. Dual systems are not providing as much power as people think. You should definitely go with P4 but keep also in mind that 3.06Ghz systems showed no increase in speed. Although using HyperThreading, it still seems that we will wait for a long time until it shows ROI.
So in conclusion I would recommend that you buy even a bit slower CPU like 2.8Ghz since there is a significant difference in price but not in performance. Save that money and buy a 21" display as mbr suggested.Cheers.

oh and more important then CPU are two things: lots of fast RAM and of course RAID RAID RAID RAID. Unfortunately we can invest as much money in CPUs but HDDs and memory are still bottlenecks. Buy a good solutions for that and CPU will become less important.

P4, hands down.
Xeons are silly for you to blow your money on.Seriously.
This is a WEB DESIGN machine?
You barely need anything to do that just fine.
2Ghz would even do you fine.
Get as much RAM as possible, of course, and a decent amount of HD space.RAID and SCSI are unecessary expenses.
Spend your money on a damn good CRT and a second el cheapo box for testing other old browsers!
That's where your money is best spent.

dude... why are you getting a Dell?
I had to use a Dell at work a couple years ago. It really sucked. Not sure about the new machines but the one I had to use had a crap motherboard with an integrated graphics card. Could not really upgrade it.
I am specing out a new PC for work too. Getting mine from alienware.com.
Oh and yea get the P4. Most apps do not even utilize the dual processors. I think Maya does.. not even sure if photoshop does..
- mitsu0
alienware... hahahaha

ok. i'll post seriously here for once. i'm using a dell latitude 1.8 p4 laptop with a gig of ram and it smokes... IF you can get past the annoying 'wander' and 'fade' the mouse does 60% of the time AFTER i stop using it. if i select something and take my hand off the mouse to type it starts to walk away from where it origionally was. i guess dells are notorious for that. but otherwise i haven't had any problems whatsoever. nice machine.
