Wondering if I should buy Express now or hold out for Pro. My needs aren't on a professional level (yet), but it's a shame not to be able to import from a variety of sources (as you can with Pro). Any comments?

Anybody?

Can you get a friend in education to get you Final Cut Pro? Only $300.
If you're only dealing with DV material, or can convert analog footage to DV then Express seems pretty good.

I recall that the educational version is $500
and it's a violation of the user agreement to use it for 'for-profit' work.

I just saw Express at MacWorld yesterday...it's very sweet, and worth the $$, in my opinion. I use Premiere...but Express, even with it's diluted power, is very sweet.

Final Cut Pro 3 Academic
M8563Z/A
$299.00from the Apple site.
And Final Cut Express is only $149!Just don't make any profit on what you do with it.
If you're like the rest of us 'struggling artists', you sure as hell won't.Albo

i think express is a good program for somebody who is into videotaping weddings and events, some one who doesnt need to apply much art to his work, just do some titles and import and export dv footage and get paid.
its a good investment for them.but if youre an artist, and you want to experiment a bit, and be a bit unique at least, then you need the pro version, of fcp, and any other program.
get the edu and then upgrade, you will endup doing that anyways, with any version you have.

can you export for broadcast format in express? there seems to be alot of features.
i've never used either so I'm in no position to compare the 2. (express VS pro that is)

What 'broadcast format' are you looking for?
Express will only do DV, which is currently not up to broadcast specs.

So, Pro can export to Broadcast formats and Express can only export to DV?
- albo0
Export isn't the best way to put it. Output is better.
With Express it seems you can work in the DV format, ie firewire in from a DV deck or camera, then edit your piece, add effects and titles and then output back to your deck/camera as DV.
What Pro offers is a wider choice of formats to work with, so long as you supply a way to get the material into the computer, which usually means purchasing a PCI video capture card.

I recommend using the easiest software to configure and use to capture. Then, switch to After Effects because that blows them all away by a mile. Movie Cleaner is great for compression for CD or web.

Apple will be coming out with an upgrade for FinalCutExpress within the next year if you buy it and want to up to the Pro version.
