Ok, i need some advice. Ive been givin a budget of $7000 to get a new PC. (computer/monitor). I do only web and print work (no 3d or anything). What i'm looking for is actual model numbers or brandnames for the best parts to fill it with (such-and-such motherboad, harddrive, usb 1 & 2, what graphic card, what monitor, etc)
any advice? :)
thanks!

REMEMBER EVERYONE
He said PC not MAC...
((i felt the same 'ol same 'ol arguement coming out of this thread))

get ddr memory if your mobo supports it. don't skimp on this... it's one of the most important resources on your system (especially if you use PS a lot)
and then get an nvidia geforce 4 4600. there may be a better model out now, but that was the best about 2 months ago.
everything else is pretty trivial (nic cards, sound cards, etc) imo
and of course, you want an optical mouse.

a 23 inch view sonic flat screen monitor

okay, okay, slinky...
but still... i use a pretty pimped pc at work... but if i had $7000 to spend on a computer, it would have to be a 17" pb with a cinema display, an airport base station, and a keyboard and mouse (bluetooth wireless preferred)
that way you have a supreme machine with a giant display, + an additional giant display of 22" + wireless capabilities to stay connected to the web for presentations down the hall.
7k is quite a lot of cash to spend. might as well get the tightest system you can.
think this:
with the new 17" powerbook and a mouse and keyboard. now that's pimp.

get a $4000 beat of a computer and pocket the rest. of course, i wouldn't do that... it's just one of those crazy ideas
- gabe0
beat = beast of a computer

yeah, it has to be a PC. and i cant keep the change (accounting is too sharp for that)
so any other advice? i'm looking for the best harddrive, best monitor, etc...

get the biggest apple cinema display you can find, and.. hum, get two of them, and then get your self an adaptor.
get a cool case from alienware, and get your parts from there too.
remember, invest in a good video card.
pretty much, get your self a computer for 3d and broadcast even tho yoiu dont do any.

i question it "needing" to be a pc. you say yourself... "I do only web and print work"
if that is the case, i don't get why you can't do it on a mac. i do web development, including server-side programming for a MS IIS server, and i can even work on a mac (although at work i'm on a pc... but occassionally use a mac to do the same stuff - and would prefer to be entirely on a mac).
if software was the issue, you could still get the 17" powerbook and spend a couple grand on software.

it has to be PC because the IT dept here wont let a mac on board (sad i know). We're pretty big and running a PC only network. But its not so bad...i mean hey, they're giving me 7K to spend on any PC i want!
so anymore suggestions? i need links or model numbers. I have to order it monday!

The Dell PWS 650 is pretty nice. Those Xeon boards can handle 4 gigs of RAM. They have nice fast drives too.

all I can say is take brand motherboard so that you have no compatibility problems, drivers, and firmwares...
with wireless, firewire, usb2... so if you need to plug something external as a camera or a harddriveabout the type, I haven't seen the prices recently but I don't think that intel is still so expensive compared to AMD, so I'd go for a P4....
nvidia graphic card all up from Geforce 3 BUT NO MX... with at least 64mb
or I've heard good things about radeon???
a lot of RAM, big hard drive, even get two, so that you can work on the other one where the system is, a DVD+-R/DVD+-RW, or CDR writer, and a DVD-ROM drive (so that you don't une the writer to read CDs or DVDs)
a good case, with a powerfull and silent power supply, and easy of access. (a diskett drive, zip drive 750mb)
as said a good screen, you have to work in front of it all day long...
with a good resolution and thin spaces between the pixels... (I can't rember the name)an optical wheel mouse... (logitech)
a head phone to listen while working without disturbing the others.
hope I had so much cash... enjoi and hope it helps or gave ideas.

As a former employee of Circuit City, I can speak negatively about the longevity of those notebook Vaios. For every two we sold, one would come back in for service / replacement within a couple months. Didn't happen with any other notebooks, especially not with that kind of consistency.
But maybe we just sold busted-ass computers. :)
- InVivio0
No you're right, Sony computers get the bozak.
- mitsu0
circuit city will be out of biznass within 3 years... mark my words.
- k0na_an0k0
maybe it's because, as i found out last night while in circuit city, they employ a bunch of half-assed don't know my ass from a hole in the ground zit faced retards who in the course of 10 minutes standing there while looking at external cd burners, dropped not one... but two unopened computers, still in the box, from the second shelf stock. morons. and you wonder why they came back broken.
oh, not saying your an any of those named guys above dude.
- mitsu0
ha! buttheads.

Since you don't need a powerful pc to do web work, spend it on fast components that will work.
Get yourself a Dell Workstation with some fast hard drives (they cost a real bundle), decent graphics card, good sound, etc. I love my dells.
Then this is the best monitor out there. Look at Computer Arts for a recent review. Oh, if only I had that cash to blow!http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/…
You'll be in heavan. Yeah, better than the cinema display, I think.

Don't get a flatscreen if you do lots of web work - the color/brightness is not acurate of what your mass audience sees on regular CRTs. My boss says at least once a week "can u make the color just a little darker" and I take him to my monitor each time and explain that this is what the audience sees.
Dual monitor setup is much cooler too - I don't know why - it just is :) I leave outlook/NTD open on my right monitor all day and all my palettes/timelines sit on the right screen.
