30. she's a graphic designer downtown chicago.
i'm sure she'll eventually become an art or creative director for a firm, but right now she's working with a bunch of 20 year olds. i'm 27 by the way but i am at least a creative director (who still designs)

Dansih designer Per Mollerup; he´s 50+some. But you guys seem to be differing between "designer" and "AD" and since his selfimploid, guess he dosen´t count.

cos a lot of people seem to burn out of design into other things, and I wonder at what average age.

When they're work starts to become sh!t in the industry, they become lecturers.... eg. like the one I had, his work was terrible..

dude working here is around 60 i think. he is still quite deep into design, but i think he feels stuck and burnt. they always give him the same kinda things because he knows his shit.
damn nice guy too. very helpful and has taught me a lot.

I know a guy, who's 56 and the art director for the best firm in my city.

some of you might burn out because you spend too much time in it.
i used to program for fun, but when i got a job doing it, and found myself programming all the time, i got burned out.
also, sitting in front of your monitor with design-related sites staring you in the face in your 'leisure time' doesn't help the matter. some of you eat drink and sleep design.
just try to get out more... jump on a mountain bike or a surfboard or snowboard or something... i think that would help.

I worked with one guy once that was mid 30s, he left the company to work at his old job he had 10 years before that (a metalworking factory), another guy was early 40s and he left because he was an oldschool typesetter that just couldn't get this whole computer thang.

I really can't see myself designing when I'm 50. I still have about 20 years.

i know designers, architects, artists and programmers all in their 50's and 60's. they are great at what they do and don't bother with trite shit that happens online...never once heard an architect with 20 years experience and countless clients bitch about a 2a rip.
i think one of the major reasons of burnout in this industry, and i'll expect the nieve flames to come, is immaturity, age and inexperience.
the industry is too young and too inexperienced to handle design. and, i'm sure anyone who's been doing this for a decade or two would say so, i know the designers and developers i know agree.
people worry too much about what a portal says is good, and what bullshit is happening to take care in their own work and profession.
if you don't want to burn out, then stop paying attention to crap and design.
there is never a reason to retire from a profession you love, work at and expecially one that requires you to sit all day and think.

he designed the original CBS eye logo.
I go to him for advice frequently.
