Whats with the recent ruckus about PNG support for browsers?
explain why they're so amazing..I'm happy with what we got already (jpeg/gif)

make a png with shadows or something transparent, save it as png-24 and then put it up on a background with pattern(i use mac IE5 browser)

what about file size?
- bca0
file size...whats that?
haha..you're right ben it tends to get a little big, but sometime there are projects that alow that...

depends on the image... sometimes smaller than jpg. and better looking. doesn't matter much now anyhow that broadband is more common than a few years ago...
go for it folks!

I think its sadly mistaken WAY too often that not the whole world is under broadband.
- bca0
it's true...use broadband savvy pics only if you know your target group...
damn thats a nasty toilet in your b/w photo serie ben...nice mood in the serie!

yo!
png files allow for alpha channels, so you can have an image that actually fades to clear instead of the way a gif file fades to white.
png files are a bit larger than gifs generally, but not so bad if you know how and where to use them.
pngs are not good for photographs or for heavily gradated gfx in the same way that gifs arent good.
pngs can also progressivly load, so you see them get clearer as they load (i dont care for that feature much though)

You guys need to read up more about png's. The type of png that fireworks uses is different than the type of png you would use in a website. If done correctly, they are small files like gif's and have no bearing on slower connections.
THE REASON PNG's are coming in to use is that there is an on going legal deal with the gif format as its claimed creators are attempting to charge royalties from folks who produce software that use or create GIF files.
GIF's will eventually be obsolete. If you've ever used PHP to create images from the server - it will do them only in JPG or PNG format. No GIF support.
- Biofreak0
man, that legal battle has been going on for years.
i sincerely doubt if they will ever win. and if they do, itll be too late anyway.

I agree - I think their claim is a little far fetched and quite greedy.
Either way GIF's are not being further developed and new formats such as PNG are yeilding better results and ARE being supported. I'd say it will take a few years, but GIF's will be obsolete.
Also notice how it requires a plug-in to save a GIF in photoshop? Adobe supports it in Image Ready, but that's not their main software...

word.

AFAIK, if a graphic app is able to export GIFs then the authors of the software have to pay some sort of royalty to UNISYS.
My only problem with PNGs is that they dont display quite the same across browsers.
see http://monkeyhouse.ca/colortest/… for an example.it looks fine in mozilla, but on PC IE the PNGs will be slightly different from their html background.
I would assume this to be IE's problem and not a fault of PNGs but it's still annoying.my two cents...
