You guys need to read up more about png's. The type of png that fireworks uses is different than the type of png you would use in a website. If done correctly, they are small files like gif's and have no bearing on slower connections.
THE REASON PNG's are coming in to use is that there is an on going legal deal with the gif format as its claimed creators are attempting to charge royalties from folks who produce software that use or create GIF files.
GIF's will eventually be obsolete. If you've ever used PHP to create images from the server - it will do them only in JPG or PNG format. No GIF support.
