My kid is starting university in September and needs a laptop for music production, I’m trying to steer him into a Mac but he’s adamant that he get a pc because it’s easier to get (bootleg) software. I told him get a Mac and I’ll pay for your software too, I don’t want him fucking around with that shit and getting viruses.
Any recos on a pc laptop for music making? Argh.
- Always go legit software. DOnt mess with pirated stuff, it'll end in tears. Lost two hard drives in the past.microkorg
- Gigabyte makes decent ones, I have one though i rarely use it, MSI is cheap but they overheatYakuZoku
- If I had to buy a laptop, I'd get the Thinkpad e14 gen 5 AMD. Price is right, good components, upgradable, lots of ports. <$1,000 CADmonNom
- macbook pro if you're payingimbecile
- You can run any software under virtualization now, so viruses are less of a concern. Access to old software (like vintage instruments), might be a benefit.monNom
- I think you may need an external audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlett for quality audio on any laptopmonNom
- Yep, external audio interface for sure.mort_
- MacBook Air has enough power for everything now days.. the catch is the dedicated usb ports..autoflavour
- Also be aware a lot of uni’s have strict rules about illegal software being used both on their networks but also to produce assignmentsautoflavour
- student pricing!imbecile
- Upgradeability is key to me: I would be looking to add a 32gb stick of ram (~$80) to get 40Gb total, and 1Tb SSD (~$100).=Under $1,500 with external audio box.monNom
- That's a very capable computer with external audio tor the same cost as the lowest spec macbook air. You'd need a $4500 Macbook Pro 14" Max to get similarmonNom
- amazing thanks guys,_niko
- Also, most DAWs are enough without needing additional plugins. At least for the first few years of producing.mort_
- I second the ThinkPad. Those things are solid.skinny_puppy
- "People are saying" It's almost as easy to pirate software for Mac as it is for Windows.CyBrainX
- context of post doesn't make sense. why still considering pc if you're concerned with stablty and legit software? student discount hardware & software. thx dad!imbecile
