Streaming the second episode now.
Ep 1 was full of clunky dialogue, the Klingons have mushmouth, and Starfleet officers nerve pinching/pulling phasers on each other doesn't feel very Trek to me.
- This didn't feel Trek either:
https://www.youtube.…ETM - But the series went on to be fine :)ETM
- I loved that one. A lot of people got squeamish over that but I don't mind a little horror. That was Contagion from season 2. God, I'm a geek.CyBrainX

But a strange mechanism that we spend the first 2 episodes starting to familiarize ourselves with a ship and crew, then we will be forced to start over again with a new set of characters for ep. 3.

Questions... does this take place in JJ abrams universe? Or is this regular cannon?
If the latter, where does this fall into the timeline between series?
- ETM0
I am concerned about too much of the war narrative taking away from what Trek does best, but still hold out hope. Otherwise it was good.
Not being in the US, I can watch it on regular TV or local streaming service, so there is no investment to stick with it or not.

I'll just leave this one here.

I have to say, those first two episodes were pretty great. Well acted, great show intro, great dialogue too. I hid from spoilers and didn't know about the one familiar character which was extremely well handled too. I've always thought Star Trek was better on TV than movies. It can spend more time on ideas, doesn't have to be so action oriented all the time, and doesn't require a one dimensional villain.
- Thanks for the review! I might have to check it out.monospaced

Looks good to me.
Looks like they're finally bringing in some proper culture and history of other species. That's one thing that Star Trek always lacked for me.
- Hello DS9?tank02
- Ugh, all the Bajoran religious culture shit was the WORST.Al_dizzle

- That was all fluffy bullshit thoughset
- DS9 was the worst series all around: most silly, most filler episodes, worst cast and least memorable.CyBrainX
- klingons and ferengi were both also fully explored, maybe you just missed all those?scarabin

I know star trek prides itself in being 'progressive' with it's acceptance on race, culture, gender etc.
But it still sounds stupid to this day to hear 'where no person has gone before' rather 'than no man has gone before'. The latter was so perfect.
And Having a chick seems stupid. Viewers will relate more with a captan kirk or JLP over the captain katherine whaterver.
But I think they do it as a good promotional angle. As it's a good message. "LOOK HOW PROGRESSIVE AND ACCEPTING WE HAVE BECOME IN THE FUTURE".
- female captain seems almost like an obligation. not super thrilled but holding it out so i don't look like a misogynistscarabin
- hey we have a female Dr Who and a Prime Minister nowGardener
- i guess we are already in the future.hotroddy
- In any case, it's 'where no-one has gone before', not 'where no person'.Continuity

I guess they just don't have the imagination anymore to conceive of a story beyond TNG and Voyager timelines. I don't want more polyfill and retconning of established things.
I binged watched DS9 recently and then decided to try Enterprise since I never watched it first run. Ugh. The mistakes and changes Enterprise makes by accident or on purpose are grating. Even small things. I saw an episode where Ferengi boarded the NX Enterprise and Archer convinced them he'd pay them in gold bars. Yet on DS9 Quark once explained gold-pressed latinum as precious liquid suspended in worthless gold. So why would the Fernegi fight over themselves for what they deem worthless.
- Admitedly, though, the gold part wasn't exclusive to 'Enterprise'. In the DS9 episode 'Little Green Men', Quark seems quite happy to accept gold as payment.Continuity
- I couldn't get passed Enterprises' opening music.Al_dizzle
- haha, I decided to give Enterprise a go the other day and my partner shouted abuse at me from the kitchen when the theme music came on :)detritus
- For some damn reason, I've been humming that piss-poor theme from time to time. My self loathing is beyond precedence.ETM
- @Continuity... true, however, in that episode wasn't Quark eventually resigned to being stuck on 1940's Earth and becoming rich and powerful?ETM
- So it makes more sense giving that position, gold was of great value to his situation.ETM
- But it's been a while, so I may have that wrong.ETM
- No, this is true. Humans hadn't heard of latinum, and the local precious metal on Earth was/is gold, so he had to work in that context.Continuity
- That Enterprise theme is one of the worst songs I ever heard. I like the visuals though. If you watch Enterprise, just watch season 4. It will change your mind.CyBrainX
- i was surprised by how much i liked enterprise until about halfway through, when the series got suuuuper boringscarabin
- Halfway was the Xindi/Expanse arc. Then?ETM

A Star Trek series can look as cool as it wants ... but if it's just some dark, violent, series-long war story, it's missing the point of Star Trek entirely. And that point is exploration, humanity finally united and getting along, and the view of the future being bright and progressive.
This looks like it's got none of that.
Also, yes, it needs camp.
- too early to tell, but i otherwise agreescarabin
- space exploration, big sci fi themes, mind bending stories... there's so much one could do with this franchise rather than explosions.inteliboy
- ^Continuity
- On top of that, our own present reality gets more shit with every passing day. Star Trek really should be the bright view of the future to help us through this.Continuity
- i'm cautiously optimistic :)scarabin
- Our future will be more Madmax than star trek.hotroddy
- i'm hoping there will be a lot of one-off stories and not some long tedious, boring war storyscarabin
- if they can build a solid story arch from begininng to end. I'm sold.hotroddy
- scarabin0
c'mon, honestly. there hasn't been a star trek series that looked this cool, like, ever.
the klingon redesign looks great. they look more brutal now and frankly the glue-some-shit-to-their-forehead... approach that has gone on for so long in the franchise got really bland.
only thing that bothered me about the trailer above was the music. really worried they're gonna pull an enterprise on us. i'm sure when creating this show they took inventory of all past mistakes though.
excited to see the mudd character again!

New trailer just dropped. Looks ... shit.

I don't want to pre-judge, but this series smells like it might be a shit sandwich.
Actually, I will pre-judge: it looks like it's going to another 'Enterprise'-style shit sandwich.
Can't Paramount simply re-hire Brannon, Braga and RDM, and just continue the stories where Voyager left off? Enough with the fucking prequels, re-boots, and lens flares already.
- Oops.
Berman, Bragga and RDM, I meant.Continuity - I think that group was great in the early 90s but jumped the shark with DS9 and Voyager. I'm not sure I would want them all back as it was before.CyBrainX
- I actually loved Voyager, for the most part. It felt much, much, much more like good old ST than DS9 or ENT ever did. Sure, there were some dud episodes, and ..Continuity
- ... some of the cast rubbed me the wrong way (Kate Mulgrew and the cocknosher who played Harry Kim), and some the aliens outright sucked (I'm looking at ...Continuity
- ... you, Kazons), but other than that, it was vastly superior to DS9 and ENT.Continuity
- Anyway, one would hope after all this time, that team would have fresh ideas. At least they know the source material like the backs of their hands.Continuity
- Oops.

The whole Klingon business was hinted at on DS9, and more fully-explained (read: retconned) on 'Enterprise' (which was a rancid turd of a series, anyway):
- And, strictly speaking, Worf's look is simply a continuation of the new Klingon look introduced in The Motion Picture (1979).Continuity
- That's true. That Enterprise episode explained how it was a genetic disease. That show was way underrated.CyBrainX
- Ugh, no it wasn't. It was fucking awful.Continuity
- Klingons were in that one? I didn't think we saw them until Wrath of Kahn.ETM
- Yes, I'd seen the DS9 Tribble episode but I didn't know any of the other stuff.Wolfboy
- @ETM: Klingons were in the opening sequence of TMP, when they were trying to take out V'ger. The only Klingon references in TWOK are in the context of the ...Continuity
- Kobayashi Maru scenario at the start of the film, and it only re-uses ship footage from TMP.Continuity
- Not only were the Klingons in the Motion Picture (briefly) but one of them was Mark Lenard. He was the only actor to be Vulcan, Romulan and Klingon.CyBrainX
- Oh, yes, that's right!Continuity
