Problem: I have a late 2011 macbook pro. The computer isoverheating to the point where it goes to sleep. It is happening more and more. The fans can't keep up and computer is so hot I can litteraly fry an egg. Mostly happens when watching videos online.
Question: Will upgrading to a SSD help my computer from overheating?

I have a similar problem. Mid-2011 MB Air. The fan is literally running the entire time, even when no programs are on, and it's always scorching hot. It started happening around the time I "upgraded" to Yosemite.
I think Apple put something in that OS that purposely messes up older Macs so people will buy new ones. I don't know. Sorry I'm no help.
- Good to know. I'm on Mavericks. Mine is a matte screen so hesitant to replace it.hotroddy
- Matte Retina would be so good.iCanHazQBN

Open up Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder) to see if there is a specific application that is taking up too much processor.
If everything checks out okay, and the problem persists, I would upgrade to the latest OS X.
If that does not work, I would bring your Macbook to an Apple Store for some service.

This work 2012 MBP on Mountain Lion also runs really hot. I find that raising it up a centimeter or so so that the lower rear area is exposed helps a lot. Also check processes like utopian suggests. I found Chrome can even be a resource hog.
- ooh, i will try raising it. thx.iCanHazQBN
- It's obviously not a real fix but it'll keep it from killing itself.monospaced
- i'll try anything at this point to keep this clunker going. i'm holding out for the next, hopefully razor-thin, MB ProiCanHazQBN
- Good idea. Will buy some laptop legshotroddy
- there are also laptop stands with fans on them for extra cooling. never used them so I don’t know if they really make a difference or just annoying noisepressplay

Yup what utopian said. Check Activity Monitor.
I had this. Tried hacks and fixes found in forums, nothing worked. "kernel_task" was going absolutely bonkers - ended up needing to get the hardware fixed - think it had something to do with the sensors that detect heat being faulty.
- I've had problems with kernel_task in in the past. Sure gets hot when those kernels start poppinghotroddy
- I've had problems with kernel_task as well - CPU was running at 600%. Took some Terminal shenanigans to fix it.face_melter

What utopian said. And at the end you might have to go to the fucking Apple Store...
A SSD won't fix that unfortunately, but you should get one anyway.

My experience is they produce less heat but doubt that is going to help with your problem. Be hard for background software to cause overheats (especially not gaming).... I'm leaning more towards hardware failure. Get a fan monitor and check to see if fans are running at normal speeds.... I've recently had to gear down my OC at home because it looks like my CPU fan isn't running where it should be. Fans break. And my experience with my 2010 macbook is the fans seem to run whenever they fuckin want with no rhyme or reason so it might not be CPU but GPU thing.... Can always open it up and pop the processor and lay down some arctic 5 thermal paste if its not the fans.... Or is 2011 the glued style books that you cant really open up and fix?....
- Never heard of arctic 5 thermal paste. I will look into it. Thanks!hotroddy

one question:
Did you ever clean it, I mean clean the fans,
I'm always in movement and make sure to clean my mac's fan every 3 month, don't use the nasty air blowing cans, it will rust your fan, buy a cheap mattress blower,
like this oneto monitor my temp I use,
smcFanControl, [ http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac… ]
it's pretty nifty- I took my laptop to a repair shop because it was so damn slow. They opened the machine up and cleaned the fan all in 2 minutes. Problem solved, lesson learned.ORAZAL
- I use a can of ECO PUFF-AIR to clean the fans, only short bursts of air, so it won't get liquid.uan
- uan, use what I advised, all the compressed air bottle will leave residue on your blades, just put it against your hand and pump some, you'll see :/GeorgesII
- Surely there's clean compressed air? The kind that DP's use to "check the gate" and clean lenses/sensors?inteliboy

Open it up and get rid of all the dust in your computer.
Also very effective is to buy new fans and install them. An SSD helps a lot but not against dusty fans.
Here is how to open your computer: https://de.ifixit.com/Teardown/M…

UPDATE: I removed the dust from the fans. They were CLOGGED with filth. Computer is running like brand new!
Thanks for the help guys
- That's awesome. I need to get tools and do the same. Or will apple do it if im still under warranty?monospaced
- not sure. my warranty was long expired.hotroddy

Yeah, I had a six year old MBP that I travelled all over with, and when I went to clean the fans they were solid dirt. You couldn't even tell they were fans, they just looked like clumps of dirt in the computer. Made it run like new again.
