    InDesign...

    Export PDF.

Then it bloody starts to open Illustrator to open the PDF, which comes up in the little tiny antique preview select page dialogue, which you have to type page numbers into. FFS...

I just wanted to export the PDF. Not be reminded of how antique Illustrator 2020 still is.

    • Uncheck “open after export” or whatever. And don’t make illustrator your default for PDFs. This never happens to me. Ever.monospaced
    • Use a default setting for starters.monospaced
    • I export PDFs from indesign several times a day sometimes. Never once has one opened auto in illustrator or any program unless specifically told to.monospaced
    • ^ Nobody in their right might would have Illustrator as their default choice for opening PDFs hahaIanbolton
    • My default pdf viewer is After Effects.nb
    • i installed bryce 3d just to open PDFsdoesnotexist
    • You should see what Cinema 4D does with PDFs. I got a 360 view of the interior of the Pentagon.CyBrainX
    • Listen to what Mono said. I can confirm all of those things. I've done it on Mac and Windows.CyBrainX

One interesting thing I've found in moving from Adobe to Affinity is the distinct lack of convenience. It's sort of how I feel when I go travel in Europe... it's not that things are difficult, but in America they're just designed to be easier - however, the trade-off is having increasingly bloated and useless systems.

As books are my primary medium, there's just so much I've gotten used to be able to shortcutting in InDesign (that otherwise should just be traits of Photoshop or Illustrator)... now in the Affinity suite, it's just I have to do the work the program is designed to do in that particular program.

Which, I mean, is how it should be. But it is strange how unlearning that added convenience layer can be such a difficult task.

    • Examples of US vs EU convenience systems?Nairn
    • ^ it's the walking and the salads that always get 'emMrT
    • This is why I have had a hard time adapting to GIMP. All the tools are there, same as PS, but it is those YEARS of experience with PS UI...i just KNOW itdkoblesky
    • Well so if there's no more Photoshop next year, you go out of business? Adapt, most design apps are 90% the same, commongrafician
    • well...this is why I use Gimp and only pay Adobe for AE....the one program Open Source cannot substitutedkoblesky

So 3 days into Adobe Photoshop 2021 (as opposed to old, reliable CS6) and I get the old "Adobe Photoshop has unexpectedly quit" message.

Friends, who among you is a newly converted Affinity Photo user?

I'm seriously considering ditching Adobe altogether. I only use it for Photoshop and Adobe fonts.

    • 2021 is rank garbage on older hardware - use the CC app and roll back to a 2018 / 19 version.face_melter
    • Adobe Fonts doesn’t work with a CC subscription anymore. There are alternatives of coursenb
    • i just got on the affinity train. enjoying it.colin_s
  • nocomply1

Welp... My Adobe Cloud subscription stopped letting me open up Photoshop CS6.

Sure, I can run their bloated 2020 version, but it hogs my system resources, includes features I don't need/use, and has some annoying keyboard shortcuts that I don't want to bother remapping.

I'm pretty certain the only way I can continue to use CS6 is to purchase a license, even though I'm paying Adobe every month for a subscription that includes Photoshop.

    • Yeah, I have hit the point of diminishing returns with regard to features / performance. The 22.0 release is laggy as all shit, so i'm not bothering any more.face_melter
    • If software is subscription based and updates regularly... why isn't apple leasing hardware. Pay monthly fee and get new hardware with software updates.shapesalad
    • Otherwise, as currently, it gets out of sync. Software updates to the point hardware is useless.shapesalad
    • The old model of buy hardware, buy software was better for the user. perhaps even the environment.shapesalad
    • No argument there shapesalad!nocomply
    • I called the 800 number for support to get some clarification on the issue. Current wait time is 1:18. That's 1 hour & 18 minutes. FFS!nocomply
    • ^vs. asking for Apple support a guy from Apple Ireland calling me back in under 5 mins, then fixing the issue in 6-7 minutes...grafician
    • The olden days Adobe would release a new version (of Ps) every 18-24 months and they were never severe. Now every two months they throat-fuck you.face_melter

It really is mind boggling how slow AE is to render.

20 years later, many generations of faster computers later.... and am still sitting here waiting for renders to spit out.

And these are super basic comps. Just some glows, blurs and noise on illustrator layers. 4:3 HD. Not even 4k or any shit like that.

    • are you rendering from 1 hd to the same hd caching on the same hd?
because somewhere along the road I learned that the hds are the bottleneck and not the cpus.
      uan
    • Project on one HD, Cache on another, Render Destination another... still slow. And AE glow sucks, looks awful. Renders painfully slow. Deepglow FTWshapesalad
    • Sometimes when AE is slow it's tied to some sort of memory bloat with CPU or GPU. I've rebooted and the same project renders like butter.evilpeacock
    • It's terrible! I can't get it to use more than 50% of my CPU, meanwhile Resolve blasts through everything at a 100%!!zarkonite
    • Convolution fx (like glow or blur) can get computationally intensive when large kernels are used. Try box blur if possible.seldon
    • If vector layers are set to cont. rasterize, comps can get heavy.seldon
    • I get you can optimize your comp, but the point is that it's not utilizing the whole CPU/GPU so no matter what it will be slower than the competition.zarkonite

All of this being said, I feel Adobe is at least attempting to step their game up (I assume stricly based on THIS thread).

My wife is using my old Mac Pro, which can't even run the new Mac OS's, BUT Adobe updated to the most recent release and it sings.

    + 1 for Adobe, BUT I feel they're still in the negative(s).

    : )

    • stricly = strickly; edit to post QBN overlords?!ideaist
    • Since we now know they've been working on getting ready for Apple Silicon/ARM, they're getting more adjusted to Metal, which runs better on "old" Macs.evilpeacock
    • My Mac Pro is the first to NOT support metal due to thee graphics card; was going to upgrade the card, BUT now that I know they're switching architecture...ideaist
    • thee = the!!! DAMN!!!ideaist
    • I have a Mac Pro 5,1 with upgraded everything: RAM, GPU, SSD, USB3, CPUs and it still gets the job done.evilpeacock
    • I figure the GPU I have now will always work in a tower or eGPU box when I move on. Win/win.evilpeacock
    • lol the typos. If the overlords allowed edits, there's no telling how badly that function would be abused. Certain shitheads would say something incendiary..garbage

Anyone here ever experience problems opening a PSD in one version of PS, whilst it loads OK in another?

My laptop runs PS 2020 whereas my work machine here is on 2014.

A client's layer and Bitmap-heavy file runs ok in my older version of PS, but simply won't function properly on my laptop - it'll load, but then it seizes PS up totally. If I show/hide a layer, I have to force a screen redraw to effect the change (eg. by tabbing the tools palettes away and back again). If I try and DO anything with the file, it's just refuses to budge. It's so fucked I can't even flatten layers or save out a copy and see if that makes any difference. So odd.

It's not a resource issue either - my laptop actually has more RAM than my desktop here, and Task Manager was saying PS was only taking 2 and a bit gig.

I've never in my 24-odd years of using PS encountered something like this.

    • affinity photo.
      just saying
      hans_glib
    • Funny you should say that - the client's just sent me an .afdesign file, which is a first. His useless designer hasn't got a fucking clue what they're doing.Nairn
    • Oh God, He's made the logo from a mix of vector and masked bitmaps. Nnngh. I fucking hate dealing with shitty designers who don't know their craft.Nairn
    • No idea, but hell yes that is super weird. Photoshop is a mish-mash of code for sure, but as long as you've got "maximum compatibility" on, files open wherever.evilpeacock
    • Maybe it's the graphics acceleration on the laptop? Shared ram for GPU and CPU? Try turning off the GPU acceleration and see if it helps.monNom
    • Yeah, that was the first thing I thought monNom (well, first technical thing - I thought many expletives prior). No dice.Nairn
    • Had the same problem recently opening an old file. I don't have a fix, I just slowly extracted what I needed and moved on...zarkonite

I just updated the latest version of Illustrator (because the old one was a week old).

It would be useful if they changed the little pop up at the start from 'What's New' to 'What's Fucked'

They could then list all the new bugs so you could look out for them. ie just because a swatch is highlighted, it doesn't mean its actually being used by the selected object.

    • Never upgrade, it's a trap!grafician
    • We have 6 designers, so as soon as one person updates to try and keep working, we all have to.slappy
    • There goes your production pipeline @slappygrafician
    • Better hope you don't have Catalina in the mix, 'What's Fucked' would be an understatement...grafician
    • Adapt or die BUT also, I'm/we're too old for this shit.ideaist
    • "ie just because a swatch is highlighted... " oh that drives me fucking nuts - but that's been an on/off glitch since 2017 at least.Nairn
    • Same the occasional 'just cos your layer is set to visible, doesn't mean it actually is' glitch.Nairn

Anyone know an alternative to Adobe Bridge ??
Just a files explorer that can see PSD thumbnails

because Windows can't see thumbnails of PSD files, that sucks

  • haga0

Not sure if this is Fuck Adobe, but it's something Adobe. What the hell have happend with my rgb here? Is it some new odd setting in AE 2019? Have my color preferences been fucked some way? Honest question. Can't find anything when I google it.

    • It has to be a bug, right?haga
    • looks like a bug. I don't have this issueProjectile
    • Are you on a computer or ipad?SimonFFM
    • Computerhaga
    • could be 16-bpc or 32-bpc pixels footage or project?
have no ae to test or experience with it, but then rgb would have more than 255 values.
      uan
    • ^ uan is correct, 8-bpc will get you RGB 0 255. Annoyingly no way to rangemap those #'s when working in 16/32 to the 8 range of 0-255.shapesalad
    • Yea, I was thinking it had something to do with 16-bpc but even if I start a new clean project in 8 it still lets me go over 255.haga

Is Adobe supposed to become a non-profit organization?

    I don't quiet follow.

    • shit—why not socialize it worldwide? Put the UN in charge and issue sanctions on users still upset that Illustrator has a canvas size limit.PonyBoy

For almost all creatives I've worked with who subscribe to Adobe CC, the software pays for a year's subscription in less than a single day's work. That isn't a bad deal at all, in my opinion.

    • Your friends are earning 12,000$ /month ? They're lucky man.Bennn
    • That's charging only $75/hour. That's normal, buddy.monospaced
    • Even at $50 an hour, it pays for itself in a day and half.monospaced
    • Assuming that, as a freelancer, you have work that fill up 8H every day. I'm glad your friends are all making 145,000$+ a year, i dont have that chanceBennn
    • I would pay a CC sub without any questions if I were making 145,000$ a year tooBennn
    • So for you, Adobe is a tax that creatives people have to pay to an independant businessBennn
    • Bennn, we all know you don't have a need for the software, which explains why you can't comprehend why they charge for it.monospaced
    • And it's not just my friends, naive little buddy. Most freelance designers on this site make livings using the software, full time.monospaced
    • Every craft in existence requires a cost for the tools. Photographers, painters, illustrators ... they all need hardware or software and it's not free.monospaced
    • painters dont have to subscribe to a 50$ monthly plan for life to get their paintbrush cleaned.Bennn
    • Paying one time and paying for the upgrades if we want, like in the old days was a good thing. Monthly plans is just a way to suck all our money.Bennn
    • Painters still have to buy paints and canvases which are arguably far more pricey per month than the tiny Adobe CC fee. Hobbies are expensive, Bennn.PonyBoy
    • Painters definitely spend more than $50 a month on supplies. Some tubes of paint cost that much alone! Don’t even get started on canvases and space.monospaced
    • Mono do you own any Adobe stock?utopian
    • nopemonospaced
    • I don't even pay for a subscription anymore. I just use it at work now.monospaced
