    Illustrator > direct select tool:

How to disable this annoying 'pull the path' around feature(which you might want to use like once in a 10+ year career):

I just want to edit anchor points, not accidentally pull the path.

    • I don't think I've ever used that, intentionally or otherwise - indeed, I had to try it out for myself now to understand what you were referring to.detritus
    • this happens in affinity designer too, tho i'm too new to it to work out how to disable ithans_glib
    • I don't want to use it, but when working quick and not being super accurate with my anchor point clicking I keep accidentally using it.shapesalad
    • Illustrator forces you to work as fast an 80 year old...shapesalad
    • < found solution. Export as svg, edit in Moho, reimport to illustrator, send to client. Basically - avoid Illustrator for path editing.shapesalad
    • Don't you keep your hand over the left side of the keyboard, so you can just flip between selection and direct (V & A)?detritus
    • As I say, I didn't even realise this was a feature, and I've used Illy day in and day out for years now.detritus
    • V, A, shift+M & Escape are crucial for path editing (on top of ctrl & alt, etc)detritus
    • I've actually found a use for it too - drawing shitty wireframes for things like rugby balls or broken zeppelins. very handy.detritus
    • yep, I use V/A shortcuts etc. It's just being quick, I'm not 100% hitting the anchor points with the mouse, which would be fine if it weren't forshapesalad
    • being near a path activates this pull path tool, which when working quick I accidentally do. Just want to disable that 'feature' as it's useless.shapesalad
    • but never mind, Moho is 1000x better for illustration and path editing. Even though it's primarily for animation.shapesalad
    • pulling the path is quicker and more effective than dragging nodes aroundimbecile

    this thread again...

just updated illustrator cc from 21.9 to 22.0 and it magically removed my legacy illustrator installation of illustrator cs5.5

oh and now the word "copy" appears when you duplicate a layer... update totally worth it.

    sincerely,

    fuck adobe

Hate the gradient tool in Illustrator.

Depending where you hover over gradient adjustment line thing, the mouse cursor changes from being able to rotate it, add colours to it, move it, move colours. And when you get close to it suddenly changes from a thin line to a line showing the gradient.

It's such a visual mental trip with everything quickly changing state while you try to get the right tool to show - such as rotate. It's mouse gymnastics.

Just give us a stable tool - two dots with a line between them. Something simple. No hover effects. No adjust the gradient there, we have the gradient tool window for that. Improve that too, make it like the one in Freehand. That was a lot more logical.

Well, my copy of CS3 finally told me to fuck off, it's not going to install. I upgraded my Windows PC to 10 and it's not working. I knew this was coming eventually.

Since I rarely use photoshop or illustrator, I *might give Affinity a whirl. I've been using gimp at work for basic cropping, resizing, etc. It works fine, but it just feels weird.

No way I'm paying for a subscription to something that rarely gets used (anymore). Which, really fucks me off actually. I spent so many hours learning this software, and I always paid for my personal copies.

But, $50/month, or even $20 just for PS is mostly going to be pissed down the toilet. I get why they did it. Why shouldn't they make money on their tool? But for casual users, it makes no sense.

    • have you checked there isn't some gizmo to make windows 10 play nice? i had the same thing happen to me with high sierra or whatever the latest macos is.hans_glib
    • the wife's it crowd upgraded her laptop without asking and suddenly cs3 didn't work. fuckers. but a quick rummage on the internethans_glib
    • dug up some plugin that allowed them to run (forced the system into 32bit mode or summat). may well be something similar for windoze.hans_glib
    • quirk 7, on the other hand... totally shit the bed :(hans_glib
    • It installs, but it won't launch. I'm at work now, I forget the error message. I'll dig into it some more, but there's not too many people running CS3 on W10section_014
    • What about Ps Elements if you only want simple things?formed
    • Have you tried running it in compatibility mode? W10 can "fake" being W7... also, you could try using a virtual machine with an older windows in it for your CS3zarkonite

i'm forever slagging of adobe,so it's only fair that i acknowledge the fact that they still keep old software for download on their site. a total lifesaver as the cs3 install dvd for some reason wouldn't mount on my newly acquired mavericks enabled refurbed macbook. i found out you can still download the installer from the adobe site, which i did and eveythings up and running.

    thanks adobe!

In Illustrator, how do you adjust the selection 'accuracy' of the boundary box around an object?

    For example:

-you have two rectangles fairly close to each other
-one selected with it's boundary box shown, manipulation handles shown
-you move the mouse cursor to the adjacent rectangle
    - but the boundary box handles of the other object are still being activated when you click to select the other box. even though the mouse cursor is like 10px+ away from the boundary box handles and over the other rectangle.

The only solution is to zoom in super tight.
    It's driving me insane.
    I really genuinely hate illustrator.

Is there a pref setting for this?
It tried lowering the selection tolerance to 1px in the prefs, but that does nothing noticeable.

    • selecting in illy is so very frustrating.Gnash
    • cmd click to select objects behind was on, turned that off, slight improvement. but I want a tighter accuracy...shapesalad
    • i think they broke it when they started recoding it with gpu acceleration. same for ps sadly. not sure if it's related to retina displays or somethinguan
    • same crappy interface reaction when using smart guides, when I get close where I want my objects, they jump some pixels until i zoo in or out sometimesuan
    • zoom*uan
    • more importantly, why the fuck doesn't the bounding box represent the BOUNDS?!? you drag a corner to a spot, it snaps, and then you realize it's not theremonospaced
    • InDesign everything is completely accurate, smart snapping, always, all the time.monospaced
    • and why did they take away the calculator in some input boxes...I don't get how they have millions and don't consolidate the UIs across their soft.uan
    • @mono. totally, all the programs should work the same for these types of ui issuesGnash
    • it is infuriating ... "close" isn't even remotely okay with a detail focused designer ... alignment is everythingmonospaced

Why can't illustrator be like all other vector editing softwares whereby: you select an anchor point - press delete key, boom, point gone, the neighbouring points now joined. Ok, they give us a "Remove selected anchor point" button that I must have pressed 10000 times already....

I can understand removing the anchor point and lines that joined to the neighbouring points - in some very very rare cases - might be what you want to do.

But I think if they used some subscription money to ask a random 100 AI users they would quickly find out no one wants it to work as it currently does. Heuristic learning and all that...

    • AI breaks the concept of selection. That only the selected item is deleted. I didn't select the line, just the anchor point.shapesalad
    • the delete anchor point tool is what you are looking for.uan
    • Create a shortcut for 'remove selected anchor points'? But yeah, point taken.Nairn
    • ( fountain pen with the - )uan
    • That means you have to exact-click on each point though - why not drag around with lasso tool and then press a single key?Nairn
    • in that case I use command-J after deleting a bunch of pointsuan
    • ..which creates direct line connections, which is not what Shapesalad means (I assume) - rather, a gracious compromise line would be preferable.Nairn
    • path->simplify?uan
    • er.. no. A great tool, but not here.Nairn
    • basically you all suggest workflows that are broken concepts. the concept is: click > item selected > [delete key press] > item gone.shapesalad
    • you can select a piece of the path, between two points, press delete, only it's gone. the anchor points remain. but elect anchor point.. nope.. broken concept.shapesalad
    • I guarantee if you select a single point and hit delete, that point and only that point will immediately delete perfectly. Every time. As expected. For decadesmonospaced
    • Yes, that's what he's saying, Mono - it deletes the anchor point and the path in between. That is, sometimes often, a problem.Nairn
    • And yes, shape, it's clearly not ideal, as I said above. I have shift ctrl F2 set to 'add points' and shift ctrl F3 to 'remove selected points'. *shrug*Nairn
    • I really need to get around to fully remapping Caps Lock one day. That's an incredibly handy key, right there next to the other handy keys, doing fuck all.Nairn

    MacBook Pro 2.7ghz i7

Turn on laptop... starts up. Open Photoshop CC 2018. New document:

    200px X 200px, 72dpi, RGB.

    New Layer.

Fill tool, click inside new layer to fill a flat solid white colour = A freaking progress bar and takes 10 seconds!

    What is it doing?

    • Sorry, "Paint Bucket Tool", I've always called it the Fill tool. Sure it was called that before.shapesalad

Damn it, Adobe! Why is it still not possible to export animations & graphics created in AFX as vectors, SVG and EPS/ Illustrator???

    • I know right? wtf...fyoucher1
    • there's a script/plugin to export shape layer animation as json data for svg animation, providing you use the plugin in website code.shapesalad
    • Moho allows each frame to be exported as SVG files.shapesalad

Hmm seems promising. But why is she using the eraser tool on the sword. There must be a better way to mask/ key an object from a white background even on this upcoming iPad version of Photoshop.

This is driving me nuts. Here's a test I did. Why when you outline a pattern brush does it give you back segments? Anyone know how to avoid this? I just want a clean outline like you would get from an art brush...

    • pathfinder help?Hayoth
    • Yes you can do pathfinder - but you end up with a ton of unnecessary points. Plus it's an extra step you shouldn't really need to do.Centigrade
    • Illustrator = worse vector editor ever. Bring back Freehand.shapesalad
