Apple staff "physically hurt" by walking into glass walls at Foster-designed campus

    https://www.dezeen.com/2018/02/1…

The $5 billion (£3.6 billion) campus features numerous glass walls, which are being misjudged by users of building causing collisions and resulting in several people receiving medical treatment.

Seven people "physically hurt" themselves on the first day the Apple Park campus opened, claimed Twitter user Kenn Durrence.

I have an oldish iMac that still runs quite well for it's age.
Replaced the harddrive a few years ago and there are a couple of minor screen patches but aside from that, it's a good workhorse still especially for running Logic and music stuff.

Anyway it has recently started turning it's screen off randomly, the computer is still on it's just the screen that goes off and you have to press the button on back for a couple of seconds to get it back on.

If you have the screen brightness v.low it doesn't happen.

Anyway I obviously trawled the forums and someone had suggested it may be a heat issue and to remove SMC Fan Control and install TG Pro which I have done. Have to admit SMC didn't seem to be v.effective any more for some reason and TG Pro is certainly a better tool for that purpose, way more control over stuff.

So to cut a long story short(!) the screen no longer randomly turns off but I have noticed one of the temps is rather high. When in use the secondary heatsink goes up to around 90-92°C. It displays in red in TG so I presume this is the high end.

I have tried to find what the top end running temps are for the secondary heatsink but cannot find? Anyone know? Are these temps dangerous?

I also read it may simply be a build up of dust inside the iMac. Now if this was a PC I'd have the side off the tower in minutes and remove all the dust but as it's an iMac this is obviously a pain in the ass. Do you think this would help the issue though? I guess it cannot hurt and prob a good thing to do anyway. The guy who replaced the hard drive for me said he cleaned it all out as there was a big build up of dust.

Although old and needs replacing I would like to keep the good girl running for as long as I can. As I say she has served me well and is still a decent machine (aside form issues like this).

    Thoughts anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Check the processes to see if something is making it run hot. Newer OS updates have had a habit of sometimes screwing with things.face_melter
    • The problem on my old MacBook Pro was 'kernel_task' running at CPU 90%+, had to fix it after each update.face_melter
    • thanks - I will look into that.
Do you know what the secondary heat sink is? I thought it was to do with the power supply which is kind of what worried me

    - Facetime Video/Audio: Holy shit I swear this has saved my LDR. I found myself resorting to repeating "uh huh" and pretending I heard what she said because we'd get so annoyed with dropped video or audio. FaceTime uses some pied piper compression so its half the upload bandwidth that Skype uses. If you have less than 2mb upload Skype is unusable. And FT Audio, we both have shitty cell phone reception to where it sounds like we're in a tunnel. Switching to FT audio is like high definition for the first time- sounds like she's right next to me and I can hear super subtle things like her breathing, throat clearing, dog panting in the background (hey don't be perverted!)

    - AirPods: Ok I fucking hated AirPods also. I have a nice pair of over ear Beyerdynamics, I dabble in hi-fi. But I found I used the wired EarPods regularly for calls, meetings, etc. Got an apple gift card and decided fuck it I'm tired of untangling ear buds. I don't care if I look stupid. I'm going to sound like a fan boy but this is a total evolution of earbuds. Not having a wire connecting the two makes a huge difference. No wire to bounce around when working out, or laying down, or make noise when you move your head and the cable drags or slightly dislodges the ear bud. Also, the charging case. It's like photography gear: the best lens/camera is the one you have on you. These are always in my ears. I forget about them.

    - Siri: Yeah siri is retarded. But siri + AirPods is like the shitty version of how they portray virtual assistants in futuristic movies. Now use siri all the time (especially while driving) to read and send texts, setup reminders in todoist, launch apps, set alarms, check weather. Now I'm thinking of switching from spotify back to apple music. Yeah apple music isn't that great but I don't even look at it. Just tell it what to do. "Play hip hop playlist", "play some Drake for me", "Love this song", "add this song to library", "add this track to my chill playlist". Also switching back to apple podcasts app for this reason.

    I'm still flabbergasted about this.

So I can use Apple's MacBook Pro USB-C charging adapter/ cable with their competitor and charge my Samsung Galaxy s8 and with actual fast charging.

    - But the same Apple MBP adapter/ cable isn't compatible with their own iPhones.

    - Even if I got an adapter/ dongle the fast charging probably still wouldn't work on iPhone X and you'd need the actual fast charging adapter for an additional $70-80.

    - I can use Samsung's provided headphones on my MBP but not Apple's as there's no lightning port on the MBP and the iPhone 8/X does not use industry standard USB-C.

    - I can plugin my Samsung Galaxy S8 to the MBP directly out of the box with the USB-C cable but Apple's own iPhones aren't compatible with the MBP without a dongle.

    This is insane.

Does Tim Cook & Jony Ive realize this?

Apple was all about simplicity and ease of use.

I guess now it's just about stupid Animojis.

    • Extra money for a fast charger is fucking woeful when outfits like OnePlus provide one out the box with a phone that costs half of an iPhone. Aaaand cue mono...face_melter

Just returned my iPhone X for an iPhone 8. Thought it was a big fail.

    - Face ID worked about 60% of the time, then I'm typing in my passcode. It never got any faster or fixed itself as far as I can tell. Fingerprint recognition just worked.

    - Swiping up for Home is a big fail. If I want to use my one hand to use the phone, I need to use my thumb to swipe up. Can't really hold the phone too securely without my thumb.

    - Not being able to turn the phone on while it's sitting flat on my desk without having to hover my face over it to turn it on was a big turn off, especially while I'm testing code and QAing things.

Anyone else do the same? How do you like the 8?

I really would like to switch to Android but I really like how everything syncs to my iMac and Macbook Pro with an iPhone.

    • I haven't found any of those things to be issues. I couldn't ever get my phone to turn on well the Home button/fingerprint combo, and the face ID works...MondoMorphic
