this 8 & 8+ are just a hair thicker than the 7 & 7+ but just as boring

    ooh, shiny glass back!

    • I think I'd rather have a sturdier phone over wireless chargingGnash
    • so little has changed, it might as well be a 6+imbecile
    • a glass back was a shit idea on the 4, and it's a shit idea nowhans_glib
    • necessary for wireless charging they sayimbecile
    • ^ ya, pretty sure that's the only reason they're using it.Gnash
    • it's not because they're copying the Galaxy S8?monospaced
    • so you can't have a case if you want wireless charging?hotroddy
    • yeah, you can have a case and use wireless charging - it's only screen down that doesn't work.face_melter
    • And you can only use plastics or glass for wireless charging otherwise, y'know, metal and physics, and conductivity, and shit.face_melter
    • Ceramic, carbon, polymer, etc. all work as long as they're non-metallic materials. Glass is just a style based decision.zarkonite

My god the new ios is awful. This switch around between apps is incredibly wonky. How many people worked on this, and how much are they getting paid? Im sure any of us with any experience with this stuff could come up with something a lot more slick and smooth than this nonsense.

When you click the messenger app, it does like this scale up thing but it also does this sort of dip down move first. Hideous. Then clicking the home button, everything is scaling, all the icons, the background... I mean could this be anymore obnoxious?

    • yep v.bad. don't get how some of their stuff is signed off lately.fadein11
    • some cool features but overall not a fan. material is still killing itkona
    • did you buy an iPhone 8?monospaced
    • ^ no. mine still works fine, and the ios should worked just as great on an iphone 7. it doesnt, so theyve failed.CygnusZero4

    • I have not upgraded and don't really have any interest in doing so yet - both the iOS and my iPhone 7.mg33
    • Yep just updated yesterday and this is the 1st time ever I've seriously regretted it. The big fonts in mail and elsewhere are hideous too. :/SteveJobs

    • I have a 7+ and don't really care. I have some crashing never seen before though. I will get the 8+ upgrade since I can get it for < the 7+ per month. weirdjaylarson
    • I don’t have an iPhone right now, but the updates for iPad aren’t bad. Makes iOS look more like a desktop OS.yuekit
    • At this point in the proceedings I'm becoming less and less bothered about phone OS's. ios11 works fine for me - i get messages, emails and play music. Done.face_melter
    • iOS works great... but I hate this new design language of bold text everywhere. like one big wireframe OS. Apple please hire some new UI/UX design talent...inteliboy

My iphone is no longer able to update my apple watch after upgrading to the new os. Fails every time. Quality stuff.

don't forget the massive amounts of storage, probably in the tens of megabytes after all the freakin updates.

  • Nutter0

Apparently there is a bug in IOS High Sierra, if you click on "show password hint" on a APFS (Apple file system) encrypted disk it shows the password, not the hint.

    • Is it officially out yet? No idea why people are so quick to update their OS. Stability is king.section_014

I installed it and had some sort of corruption error, It wouldn't let me sign into my disk. Worked with customer support to get it fixed for about 2 hrs. Didn't work, had to wipe the drive and do a clean install.

Works fine now, but it was a fuckin full day lost getting everything back to normal.

    • I had that error with the last update, I had to login (by install on external harddisk) and delete outdated register files for it to finish the login.Nutter

On that note, considering using a new laptop.

Are the new Macbook pros still shitty? Is the bar thing worth getting?

    Any recommendations on a monitor?

    • They're decent, just not exactly what people had in mind. The bar is not useful, but the models that include them are more powerful.e-wo
    • They're way more than decent, to be fair.e-wo

Since installing ios11. My car no longer recognises the phone. No music or podcasts for me. When texting, the keyboard covers the last thing someone wrote. Twitter constantly spazzez out thinking it is in portrait mode. SHITE!

    • Yeah, they fucked up the bluetooth for third-party stuff. My Gear S3 would randomly disconnect and refuse to connect properly. The last small update fixed that.face_melter

After the constant and endless nagging for the update on the iphone, I finally updated to the new IOs, and well...things are horrible, a very slow phone, crashes, freezes and not even after the 2 other extra updates, nothing got better..
its an Iphone 6, and it was superb at the time of purchase, but now what am I supposed to do... buy the newest Iphone, and rinse and repeat every 2 years?

My friend in NY told me he never updates for this reason, so when he had a problem with the iphone's battery, at the Apple Store, they said they would not check the battery or even do a replacement if he didnt do the update first.

I am trying to look for alternatives for mobile phones, but have no idea where to start...but I am almost sure my next phone wont be an iphone.

    Any suggestions?

    • everyone seems to be loving the pixelGnash
    • Nobody seems to be kicking off about the Pixel's missing headphone jackIanbolton
    • < and are you suggesting technology needs to slow down because you don't see the point in updates?Ianbolton
    • the lack of jack was inevitable - everyone who moaned also knew it was progress - still a pain in the ass for now though.fadein11
    • You could have just turned off the updated notices and stuck with iOS 10.monospaced
    • You can always roll back to 10 - Apple keep the authentication servers open for a while after the release of each new version. Be quick though.face_melter
    • Be aware, rolling back will wipe your phone - so save everything you want saved first.face_melter
    • Apple won't let you roll back, I just read. Fucking sucks, right?monospaced
    • I believe they stopped authenticating iOS 10 already, those bitches.monospaced

    • @lanbolton not sure where you are getting these ideas from me... but I just dont want updates to make my phone unusable, am I asking much?Fabricio
    • @monospaced Yeah, apple wont let me roll back. I bought the phone, but I dont feel like I own it. They fucked up my phone, and there is nothing I can do about iFabricio

    • I'm an Apple guy when it comes to computers, but I have an Android phone and I fucking love it. Email and calendar sync with Google, that's all I need. Great OSelahon
    • I'm running a 2 year old phone on Tracfone, a Moto X Pure. I pay about $100 every 4/5 months for airtime and data, and hook into wireless networks at home/work.elahon
    • @fabricio I hate the idea that eventually my phone will be unusable because Apple stop supporting the OS. It's shit, but technology is always moving aheadIanbolton
    • I'd really like someone to release on OS that I could chuck on my old iPhone which turns it back to the phone it used to be. Would Instagram work? Probs not!Ianbolton
    • ^ Apple are a lot better than most at supporting old devices. General OS support for Android phones is about 2 years, even less.face_melter
    • ^ truGnash
    • by supporting do you mean fucking up? It's been proven over and over that any update on a device over 2 years old is going to slow it down, crash it, fuck it...set
    • I think personally I'd rather not have updates to an old android device and have it continue to work...set
    • But it's not proven. Why have my old devices remained unaffected after updates. Why my families and friends also not affected?monospaced
    • It might be the case that they target certain people over others for forced crashes and slow down s. But on what basis do they decide?monospaced
    • Apple's notorious for lack of support of old devices, it's by far the worse between MS and Google. My Nexus 1 still works really well, better than my 4s.zarkonite
    • I'm including the last 20 years of hardware experience here btw. They've been horrible at supporting old hardware for a long long time.zarkonite
    • How long should they support old hardware? Who is doing it better?monospaced
    • my 4s is still kicking and OS is upgraded to the max. I got many years of use out of all my macs. I wouldn't say they were notorious for not supporting stuffGnash
    • Microsoft... you can pretty much take any old piece of software and run it on their brand new OS. I have DOS games running on W10.zarkonite
    • They should use their considerable resources and avoid creating new things that break the old ones. That's why they'll never make it in enterprise, they can'tzarkonite
    • be relied upon. No hospital is going to be dumb enough to use iPads for their doctors, they know it's a bad long term bet.zarkonite
    • Supporting old software isn't the same as supporting old hardware. Microsoft doesn't even have old machines to support ... they \make only a new tabletmonospaced

Anyone mac people moving from iPhone to Pixel? What are you doing about music, podcast, browser etc? Using chrome across phone and mac? Does chrome still eat a lot of mac power? Does spotify allow podcast subscription like iTunes does?
    Questions...

    • I might-the new iOS update is constantly lagging. I have a 64GB with 30GB of space. music constantly cuts out while switching between apps. fucking annoying.lvl_13
    • first world problem, I know. but I listen to music about 8 hours a day, and the constant hiccups are just so irritating.lvl_13
    • Spotify has some podcasts, not all. I use Spotify, NRP and WNYC and that covers me for radio.nb
    • Trust me, you won't miss iTunes.nb
    • I use Chrome on my Android and Safari on my Mac, works great. Although most people I know use Chrome on Mac and find it to be fine.nb

So this is what the new Portrait & Lightning Mode looks like on the new iPhone... Seriously LOL... looks like really bad Photoshop. Its a gadget for kids. It looks totally ridiculous.

    • I can criticize Android too, the new portrait mode on the Pixel2 looks so so from what i've seen, the blurring doesnt seems to work perfectly.Bennn
    • the bottom one's not bad._niko
    • Second one is okay. 99% of users would be made up with that.Hayzilla
    • If i was the CEO of Apple I would have said NO to that, the results are not good enough. Looks like a free app in the AppStore.Bennn
    • There's no phone that's going to give you that lighting instead of the awful front-facing flash most people use.CyBrainX

Reminder - Apple can brick phones repaired with third-party components.

    https://motherboard.vice.com/en_…

They can get fucked with this shit.

  • utopian-1

    Innovation Never Sleeps

    • Yeah, it's authoritarianism applied to quality control. I prefer Android, yet I don't see why you would criticize Apple over this.nb
    • Because it perpetuates Apple's lie that third party repairs are bad. Apple's certification is expensive and restrictive.face_melter
    • They do it with the newer MacBooks - intentionally making them almost impossible to fix or upgrade without spending inflated amounts for 'Genius' repairs.face_melter
    • Genius Bar said my fried MBP was a $1800 repair and no guarantees on data. Local shop fixed it overnight for $450 and full data recovery. Crazy.monospaced
    • Apple has always tried to be authoritariansince1979
    • They used to build machines purposefully open, to some extent. Personally it drives me mad how they closed up while still using off the shelf parts.monospaced
    • You can build a hackintosh. What more are you asking for?since1979

Have a second hand 13 inch 2,26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro from mid 2009 with 256GB and 8GB RAM plus extra external monitor.

Thinking in buying a new one soon and while reading other people's questions I came to think what if I keep this on e and invest in a iMac:

    • Fusion Drive has flash storage and a spinning drive.mg33

Serious question: Is there any USB-C adapter that has DisplayPort or HDMI together with USB and ethernet while charging the MBP? I only find adapters without ethernet.

We need some new hardware soon and we want to keep our displays. Our displays have USB-Hubs for keyboard etc. Our wifi is too slow so we need ethernet.

Goal: Charge MBP, Connect it to HDMI display and its USB hub, and use ethernet. One adapter.

    • your MBP doesn't have an ethernet port?Gnash
