Given the current state of the iOS 6 Maps, Google can just not release an app for iOS and say how better are the maps on Android than the ones currently on iOS.

I didn't even think I used maps that often, till today and ended up three miles away from my intended target. Nightmare. So tempted to fuck it and get an android phone but have a feeling I'd not like the OS as much as apple. Damn it.

I read somewhere that google have a maps app waiting for the ok from apple - trying to find the link

@craigatkinson
"Google Maps VP Brian McClendon declined to discuss Apple's new maps with the Times, but he did emphasize that "it takes a long time and effort to figure out how to do this right. Experience is important." He also declined to confirm whether an app for Google Maps would be made available in the iTunes App Store — like the YouTube app that was released just last week — but said "we want to make it available for everyone." The update for Android is reportedly coming today."

^ Son, I am disappoint. Steve would have told us we were simply "reading them wrong" and "not to read them like that."

If they don't make an app, it will draw people to Android.
- I'm not sure one app would do that, hope so thoughcraigatkinson
- There are 4 things I need on my phone: call, text, google maps and a camera. Everything else is unnecessary.instrmntl
- I'll add email to that list. But yeah, pretty much. Maps I use ALL the time.ETM
- Oh yeah email.instrmntl

This is pretty funny:

Leaving the apartment without a reliable map is the most excitement I've felt in years.

I used the map a lot. When they added public transportation it was a godsend, hell, it even told you in how many minutes the bus was going to go by the stop here in Barcelona.
Now on iOS 6 when I select direction for public transport it takes me to the App Store to find a routing app and it finds none.
So we had a crucial app of the phone for so many years replaced by a subpar or released too early app that removes functionality from your phone.
Also, it's impossible to install a replacement app and set it as default.

Good to see the CEO stepping up and admitting they failed to deliver a replacement for an app that might lacked some new features they wanted but worked pretty well almost everywhere.
Let's see how this improves, and if Google decides on developing their own app in the meantime.

^^ that's exactly what happened. Anyone who thinks that Apple is just stupid is really stupid. Google licensed their maps for iOS and then released Android, with a superior version of Maps. Apple didn't like that the iOS Maps was inferior and the control over that quality depended on it's Biggest competitor. What do you do? You send them a flying cock and release your own version, that you can control. Now, it's pretty obvious that a good mapping solution is no easy task, Google is working on theirs for nearly a decade with lots and lots of user feedback, backed by a browser solution too, which probably has even more use than their mobile one. Apple just started a couple years ago, maybe 3. They have had no user feedback, and they don't have a browser version either (at least public). It's going to take time to get it right, it sucks to have it half baked right now, but they really had to cut the cord.

- maybe apple will buy waze (please!)!jaylarson
- if they cared about their users and not think of them as idiots who gobble everything, they would have paid licensing for another year or two while they built their own that doesn't suck. But no, they decided to take advantage of the fact that Apple consumers are dumb and will eat any shit Apple throws themmonolith

FYI IOS users, google maps is even better on Android.

I've been on the fence with the S3 waiting for this release before deciding. I can't imagine they can fix all this quickly, and a 3rd party app (Google) won't integrate into the OS quite the same way to be ubiquitous.
Apple may have just made my decision for me. No way Jobs would have let this software see the light of day yet, despite his issues with Google.
