Apple just acquired HopStop, meaning they'll have integrated public transportation at some point. Finally.

Hmm, the Victorian Police have now issued another warning for Google Maps. Funny, none of the the other news outlets are picking this one up. Guess it's not as sensational if it doesn't have Apple in the headline.

here is a thought, if your lost call someone and ask for directions, and if you need your phone as your primary means of directions maybe you should just stay home

Yup. After doing extensive road travelling over the past 15 years with much of it long before having GPS nav or internet in the vehicle, we learned that you always trust road signs first, over maps. Maps will put you in the right direction and are necessary when you can't find a sign, but signs are almost never wrong.

C'mon people, you have maps on your phones, that shit didn't even exist in 2005. How long did Garmin have to get their shit together and failed to?
I think you have to be a bloody idiot to ignore a road sign and then drive for hours in the middle of nowhere without wondering if something might be wrong...

So have the maps gotten any better over the past month? Feels like most people have put away their torches and pitchforks. I still have iOS5 on my 4Gs though.
- I was wondering the same thing. Is it okay for me to upgrade? Can I get subway directions with it yet?monospaced
- Co-worker just confirmed, no subway directions yet.bulletfactory

^ I'm guessing they didn't check this on street view before they set off.

The issue in Australia is that Apple Maps are tagging council areas, which in regional areas can be very large, and occasionally share a name with a town they contain. In this case, searching for Mildura picks up the Mildura Rural City Council instead of the town. The marker for it is simply in the centre point of the council area. I'm not saying that's not a big problem, it is, but it's a different issue from "it's in the wrong place".
What's more interesting though is the idiocy of those who got lost. Mildura is a riverside holiday town, and I'd hazard to guess anyone going to Mildura would be well aware of that fact (otherwise, why are you going there?). It's clearly not going to be down endless dirt roads into the middle of nowhere.
Worse, if you look at where Apple Maps takes the wrong left turn, it's in the town of Ouyen. Not 100m before the intersection is this clearly labelled sign showing the direction to Mildura.
