    @intelliboy
If you like a casual evening web browse im sure you would get enough use out it. I was surprised I use it so much, I expected yo be wanting a laptop when using a tablet, but its not the case.

If anything I find moving to a laptop to do nothng but web browse after using an ipad kinda clunky and not as enjoyable.

    • Also I've not had any YouTube problems. I'd look into how common that is. Unfortunate for formed :(Hombre_Lobo

    lol on wanting Flash.

    • after you play with all the apps on the iPad, you'll be like, Flash?omg
    • Lol, sites i frequent have flash based content you see.Hombre_Lobo
    • Flash to me are still the most interesting sites design wize with more possibilities, it just sucks finger browsing flashmoldero
    • @hombre_lobo - majority of ads maybe Flash. your sites need to upgrade beyond Flash.omg

we have the 1, and my folks got the 2 for so we can skype..

    both are good..

that said, generally speaking, it just seems a bit odd to be dropping cash on something which is already superseded ..

granted its a bit cheaper, but in 2-3 years time, it will seem ALOT older..

    • yeh I think its probably a wiser investment to get the 2, for resale value alone.Hombre_Lobo

my experience with honeycomb has been fantastic. now i can not comment on the in store demo tablets since i don't really know the environmental conditions they run through. but in response to the transformer 101 (first gen). holy cow, i love it!

in terms of software availability both Android and iOS platforms have a plethora of options and connecting to cloud based services is norm. (A3, google music, docs,TV, vnc, even svn). both tablets are quality but what really sets apart the Transformer is the customization aspects which on my ipad is non existent. What do i mean? well, with android, you can customize the OS to your liking. (very rainmeter like) due to the open nature of the os, wielding the display to your liking is a piece of cake. I got an information HQ on my displays/deskops. for example, it gives the run-time environment on all my servers, my storage(a3) and my game servers(minecraft) without ever touching a key/screen. connecting to my phone/wifi and the Transformer with my desktop is a no setup process. google has made this link as simple as simple gets. Streaming video is a cake walk but even so VLC is available.

now i do bring it outside (on occasion) but that's the thing, for us, this isn't really an outside device. in our house hold, we use it as an everywhere device(that's got a good ring to it; "the everywhere device").the bathroom, kitchen, couch, bedroom and if im on the go i bring my labtop.but even so the keyboard that connects to this is absolutely freaken great! (and it's always a smile when you pop the screen off and hand it to clients for closer inspections of document/ work)

the 32/64 gig internal storage, optional SD card reader or usb inputs help in bringing movies along. (vlc, that shit can read any format). the 18 hour battery life (shit charges full in 1 hour) and the dual / quad cores help in normal frame rates, browsing the web or simply resetting computers/servers while i take a poop (tmi?).

anyway. like i said, for peeps in our field, ipad and android is a need for testing and whatnot. but i by far use the transformer way more. my ipad is sitting on a self only to be powered for testing.

one more thing. next time you're out and messing with the transformer. try a reboot. see how it runs. i don't have response lag on mine and it shouldn't do it in the demos but like mentioned, i have no clue what people are doing to it in the stores.

    • yeh i should have rebooted it. good point. A second visit to the shop maybe needed.Hombre_Lobo

    Hey Hombre,

I just got the 2 a few weeks ago, lovely thing. I have my NAS drive set up with all my movies on it. Got Buzz Player HD installed on the iPad to handle the streaming/transcoding. It'll play any format you throw at the iPad from the NAS. Plus, with Buzz, you can stream (or download, and it'll transcode on the fly) from your mac/pc.

  • Hombre_Lobo0

Hey seeessess :) long time no see!

Thanks for the info dude, that sounds awesome. Buzz player sounds ace, Im doubtful but it would be nice if the ipad 1 can play those files, but going by what others say it appears to lack the horsepower. Maybe ipad 2 makes sense...

    Cheers dude!

Hombre_Lobo, what did you decide on in the end? Did you have a good go of the Note 10.1? I'm interested in it compared to the ipad3. I like the stylus option for drawing.

  • formed0

Just to reiterate....YouTube is absolutely worthless on the iPad.

Anyone know why? Is it simple streaming problems or a Google vs. Apple shove match?

Netflix, though, does a simply stellar job of streaming without any problems...at full quality...for a full movie

    • i haven't any problems with it, but i do find in browser youtube interface much better.Hombre_Lobo
  • Hombre_Lobo0

    yooooo craig!
i certainly did decide and I'm now the happy owner of an iPad 2.

(when you say note 10.1, I'm guessing you mean the samsung galaxy tab 10.1)

it was a very tough choice but the overall smoothness of the iPad interface clinched it in the end. I do however much prefer the android system approach in terms of openness, which is why i was quite disappointed in the responsiveness and smoothness* of the tegra 2 tablets (by comparison). including the asus transformer which is thought to be the one of, if not THE best of that tegra 2 bunch. in reviews the asus transformer is said to be the smoothest of the tegra 2 tablets. sadly i didn't get to have a go on samsung galaxy tab 10.1.

*And when i talk of the smoothness / responsiveness differences they aren't worlds apart, but it does naturally affect the overall experience.

Im sure if i had an asus transformer i would be extremely happy, but when put side by side i preferred the smoothness of the iPad.

I do actually prefer the 4:3 ratio of the iPad, but you lose out on the higher res of the android tablets hd 1280x720 at the 16:9 ratio. android is naturally a better ratio for movie watching, but for web browsing the 4:3 seems better to me.

difference between iPad 3 and iPad 2 to me are quite minor, i won't be upgrading at all. the screen is adequate on the iPad 2 and i love it being jailbroken, something the 3 won't get for a long time.

    -------
    [lengthy reply...]

I actually found my iPad a little annoying until i got it jailbroken, it felt very locked down, like when you want to play a video someone has emailed you, or extract certain files, but after jailbreak it was loads better. not to mention how horrific iTunes is on windows. once jailbroken you never have to touch it again, i use ifunbox now, its a free simple fast little program.

Flash isn't really too much of an issue, i use iswifter when i need to see flash content on the iPad, which isn't all that often. however it still doesnt fix the fact that iOS doesn't support flash without any actual reason for not having flash, i can kinda see the why with the first gen iOS devices in regards to flash draining battery, but modern devices can easily handle it.

Also why does a company think they can tell you what you can and cannot view online. Its like a company said "check out our new tablets, they're great...no no you can't view images, that drains too much battery". when in actual fact they are just saying that their devices are inadequate to give you full internet.

But regardless of all of those annoyances and embarrassingly pretentious adverts and keynote speeches (which encourage their products to sell like hot cakes), i still prefer the iPad 2 to the likes of the asus transformer, mostly because of the responsiveness and smoothness. regardless of all the tasteless ads and promo videos, the products are still great and i shouldn't let those factors taint my enjoyment of the product, but as a brand you kinda can't help it.

The sad thing with android generally is that i could purchase an asus transformer, take it home and improve its responsiveness and smoothness by putting a custom operating system (referred to as a rom), which is great, but why can't it ship with a very smooth rom pre installed.

I'd like to think hardware advances with tegra 2 etc would mean that the interface smoothness would improve, but it still isn't quite as nice as the iPad.

I've yet to try ice cream sandwich so I'm unsure as to how much improve the overall experience is with the new tablets. I'd love to see how its improved though, particularly with the quad core tegra 3, should be awesome.

    • well, Adobe killed Flash for mobile now.ernexbcn
    • That they have ernex. But I'm sure thing would be different if ios devices supported flash.Hombre_Lobo

Also, you missed out. Yesterday, TJ Maxx was selling iPad 2's for $400 (they only had like 15 per store though)

  • raf0

iPad 2 is slimmer and a little lighter—still too heavy for a tablet imo.
It has cameras if you need them for video-chatting.

The 2 is very slightly but noticeably faster, even in web browsing. There are lots of apps that let you play any video file without conversion but some higher-res movies stutter on iPad 1.

Other than that, they're the same thing. For browser testing the 1 will suffice. I am only upgrading to 2 because I need to have one to regularly take photos of for a sleeve brand I am launching.

    • thanks raf, good to know about the video stutter.Hombre_Lobo

^I'm in the UK dude!! but thanks!

Price is £400 everywhere here (£390 some places online), not much of a varied price, but thats kinda common with most apple products.

    • $400 US = 298 Euros :)
But they prolly don't have TJ Maxx's out there...

if you have any desire to turn this into an instrument or controller for music or MIDI in general maybe live video mixing, stay with the iPad. It has more apps available giving you more options (most all the options) and better support with lower latency transposing these signals to your DAW.

You could always buy refurbished too, it's just an iPad and comes with a warranty so no real loss buying cheaper. Maybe look into used? I bought a 32gb 4th gen iPod Touch for $150 because someone wanted to upgrade to a phone for Christmas, so I know the deals are out there.

  • Hombre_Lobo0

    @Plash

You are the wind beneath my wings. Thanks for all that info dude! very useful!

So you have the keyboard too? awesome. It is a consideration as I could get an ipad 2 OR the transformer + keyboard for the same price! Plus you can install ubuntu on the transformer for full desktop functionality!

Have you tried playing hd files on the ipad? Does it deal with them ok?

Thanks again mate, I expect to receive an invoice in my mail :)

    • (ubuntu running on an sd card/usb, not installed per say)Hombre_Lobo

wow, thanks Hombre, very useful info as ever! You know you'll be using a mac soon...Then an iphone...etc etc!

One of my main considerations is the use of the pad [of which ever type] to draw on / with. The Samsung note phone, I really like the stylus, much more than finger drawing on the iphone. I have seen the generic styli for ipad but things start to add up cost wise so it might be over £500 for the lowest ipad and a decent stylus...

Does anyone have experience of drawing with these tabs?

    • I have an android tab and stylus (cheap), it's a bit of a let-down to be honest. not terribly accurate and no pressure sensingmonNom
    • which, if you're coming from drawing on a wacom, really is a tough step backward.monNom
    • I'm using the bamboo stylus and sketchbook pro app. Pretty good once you get use to it. £22goldieboy

2 has face time I think?

And...hang on, I thought you knew everything?!

  • Hombre_Lobo0

    @plash,

that is awesome information! You're very helpful dude! Thanks.
You've put a spanner in the works now man! The transformer does look sweet and its cheaper and its open to customization and no itunes!

How do you find video playback compares between them? does the ipad 1 struggle with HD files? (like raf says above)

Do find the ipad interface smoother and more responsive or are they equal?

I know there are more apps for the ipad, but one thing ive thought is that I dont really see what apps i would use. I use evernote, movie players, the browser, games occasionally, but not many.

I know I'd be happy with either, but trying to work out whats best for me. Thanks again dude!

  • Hombre_Lobo0

You've put me in quandary plash. A QUANDARY!

  • Hombre_Lobo0

^haha Im actually using a friends MacBook air at the mo, and the build quality is great. I'm quite enjoying mac osx too, still preferred windows but it's just preference and fimiliarity. I'm kinda considering the possibility of getting a Mac mini at some point too.

Stylus wise I have no experience, would be a great tool for you though, you're drawing crazy! Can't you use the same stylus on the tab 10.1 that you can on the note?

    Try eating it.
