I have a roommate. He is not listed on our ISP account. Is there a law that says I'm responsible if he downloads stuff?
Obviously, the company would go after me. If they did, could I not say, 'Oh, must've been my roommate.' It seems he could even admit to it, as long as he's not named in the suit.
This seems like a childish way to deal with these things, but really... I live in Canada. Foreign distribution companies pressuring my govt and judges to rule in their favour? Lame, dudes.

I got like 7 of those notices from Comcast regarding downloading copyrighted material. Unfortunately my Comcast notices were going to an old email account i never check, so I didn't see them until they had piled up.
So far nothing has ever come of it, and of course I have stopped downloading shit; it's not worth the risk. What's stupid is, it was stuff that was available from Netflix, I just was too impatient to wait for the disks to arrive. Lesson learned.
Back in May, a district court Judge ruled that an IP address is not a person, and denied a company access to subpoena ISPs for personal information.

- I DLed Hurt Locker, but I haven't watched it or even opened the file. I haven't broken any laws.nb
- Most Canadians don't live anywhere near a lawyer that would be able to properly handle a case like this.nb
- actually most canadians live in cities with plenty of lawyers around. Canada is very urban population wise.Dodecahedron

it's all bullshit, they don't lose money, i wouldn't pay to see 99% of the bullshit i download so they are not losing money from me. If a movie is worth it, i'll see it at the theaters where i get raped on the price of the flick and the food anyway.
- < This, I go to the cinema about twice a month. and I download about 6 films a month. I wouldn't buy those filmsanimatedgif

is there a such thing as downloading illegal content? how can you know what is legal or not legal til you open it up and look at it? in which case, nothing is illegal til you verify its contents. downloading online is a mystery box til you receive it. perhaps ISPs should be billed for having such content available to begin with on their services. Corporate responsibility should not be passed down to a consumer.

So you basically buy a computer and internet access to entrap yourself into paying fines.

I've never considered file sharing pirating. Pirating is like bootlegging, its those guys on the streets who make tapes and DVDs of movies and sell them while they're still in theatres... I don't think there are many of them around anymore. The biggest culprits these days aren't the file sharers its the big websites who are profiting from redistributing the files with advertising. There are plenty of non-profit community orientated torrent sites out there.
Its also not stealing. Technically and legally its NOT stealing so don't keep thinking that. There is no physical loss or even a demonstrated loss in revenue because of downloading a movie. Digital technology has altered the entertainment landscape, its the nature of beast so to speak. The major copyright holding companies aren't letting us know that they are secretly very interested in file sharing, it has expanded their audience base to a major degree they just have to change their business plans. They are playing two faced, blaming the consumers as usual while figuring out ways to take advantage of them.

I've gotten two such letters.
About a year or two ago I got a letter letting me know that the amount of data had gone well beyond what they observe as normal traffic and that if it continued they would cap my data usage.
Then a month ago I received the DMC notice from Comcast stating that the IP add. associated with my account had been reported as illegally uploading the files.
I've resolved to just buy the shit from now on. I always felt sort of shitty downloading stuff. It was more out of impatience for actual release than of cheapness.
- lol - i didn't even realize i had this screen name, or that i signed in with it...jtbuckwalter
