Can you be bothered to scan a QR code? If so, why?

In Montreal, there are QR codes on ads in the metro... but we don't have any network and/or cellphone signals in the metro. How funny is that?

I have never scanned one in my life. I have seen them demonstrated, and thought to myself "Oh, so that's what those are all about" then afterwards I've thought "people are losers".

no. that is dullest and useless invention of all times.

typing is hard

I am yet to meet anyone who uses them. It's the kind of thing that agencies love to sell clients, to look all digital and whatnot, but I'm convinced no one uses them
- But you haven't taken the time to read that people, actually, do, use them.canoe

in boston we also have them in the subways. If I see one in a magazine I might scan one, but my blackberry is shit at recognizing them.

I have had to put them on exactly 2 projects. They do seem to be picking up pace here, in Australia, but they are still few and far between and I haven't been bothered to download a viewer.

No. It seems like an annoying step between information.
After the first time, the novelty is gone.
- I see this being quite popular for cultures who prefer to stare into little screens than do anything else.canoe

You see them here everywhere, but I don't get the point.
I doubt anybody scan them... Most people will find quicker to google something up for more info, than using an awkward app to read the thingy.I see good location specific uses in galeries or shows, or even for wayfinding... but in posters/mags make about as much sense as adding a twitter/facebook logo.
- How is quicker to google? The scan takes you right to a vid, or a page. I don't think you fully understand the idea.canoe

plus you don't get the benefit of promoting the url you become reliant on the user bookmarking the page for future visits. if they don't then chances are they have no idea what the actual url is and can't find it again. i think they are pointless, having said that you get a least one view per lazy troll that you might not get if they can't type real words.
- I don't think this is a strong enough reason, nor backed up enough, to not consider the idea.canoe

Also the process is all wrong.
URLs: open browser, type address, done.
QR: open qr app, get close enough, hold steady, click to take photo, wait for app to open browser and load url.As a usability issue it's a no brainer!
Remember the three clicks rule and extend it to a three actions rule.- < thismaikel
- Yes, exactly. Never made much sense to me. It's a gimmick (for now).Jaline
- If people were googling products on site then there would be no need for this... it's much more fun to point and click than to type.canoe
- It's a total gimmick, and?canoe
- If people want to do it for fun, that's fine. Just calling it exactly what it is.Jaline

I saw one on a billboard ad on the highway.
JK. But wouldn't surprise me if I soon did.- ha! a QR billboard for a safe driving campaign?pizzafire

saw one pasted among some graffiti on a wall with nothing accompanying it. my curiosity got the best of me and i was directed to some nice random art works online. was actually kind of a fun thing with a nice surprise in the end.
in general, a url works just fine.

Used them recently at an event/conference. We put cards/items in the attendees room as a turndown service, sort of clues as to what was going to happen the next day. The card included a QR code that would give them an additional hint to the secret agenda. That small incentive made them functional and 75% of the attendees scanned them.

Scanning culture is upon us no doubt about it... I think we should embrace it.
Why would anyone in their right mind say, "Ya know what, I don't think it will work, so I don't want your damn project, no matter how many billable hours I'll produce creating this niche site/campaign."
Really guys?
- I would still use them in campaigns if needed. Just saying I'm not a huge fan.Jaline
- scarabin0
no, but i still put them on campaigns, 'cause clients and creative directors love 'em
- canoe0
Ok, so the guy asks... "Why would you scan it?"
Well, probably to get more information for starters, and two, because it's in "my" nature now to let the smartphone think for me now. Thirdly, I've been sucking the tit of my smart phone since I bought it and now I prefer and am conditioned to evaluate everything through my smart phone... duh, my god, like don't you, like, get it already?
btw - if you haven't seen idiocracy, you should.
- I found that with incentive, there is a response. If it's just to get people to a website, good luck.monospaced

i do when it seems relevant, used in a few projects, although mobi tags not qrs...they work, better than typing in a long url on the go
