There's a sale at Popeye's this weekend and I want to load up. I'm wondering what to get and what the kids are taking these days.
I want to gain weight and get stronger. I don't want to be able to bench a million pounds but it'd be nice to huck a few large rocks around...
A friend says I should be taking a 1000 calorie supplement... maybe I will though it seems like that would be hard on your organs...
I play squash 3-4 times a week, just started weight training again and work daily as a stone mason/landscape construction foreman. (Design is a hobby for me now..;)
Any tips would be sweet. Cheers

egg is the best protein.
but you can add a protein shake. ex. a GNC.

eat real food, stuff that looks like the living thing it came from and is not processed.

- in my experience, its extremely difficult to get enough protein from 'real' foods to meet your daily requirement... I agree real food is best, but you need to eat (at least) 1 gram of protein for every pound you weigh -every day - to gain muscle. supplements help!boom

Thanks bros - all good stuff.
I'm gonna get a multivitamin, some kind of protein powder and something that speeds recovery in muscles (not sure what maybe the guy will know at the shop.) I already take a whole food supplement in my morning smoothie similar to greens plus.
And I guess try and increase me food intake to more frequent, smaller, square meals.
I'll let you know what I learn, Thanks

drink beer for 2 months every night of 5 pints and you will gain the weight, then stop drinking and start exercising.. all that fat will become muscle after 1.5 months and your golden.. rinse and repeat..

whey isolate + long chain carbos

1 gallon of 3.5% MF milk per day. You'll grow as fast as a baby cow.
but make sure you're working hard or you'll turn into a blimp.

What acescence said: real food. Just more for it.
Supplement with protein if you feel you have to. But In My Arrogant Opinion I'd say vitamins are more important.

You want to me on an intake of the equivalent in grams per day of protein, to your body weight in lbs.
If you're starting out then just stick with the whey protein as a supplement. Try to monitor the amount of fat you're in taking each day too (60g max where possible)

honestly, any supplements you purchase will be utterly pointless unless you're sticking to a strict routine that includes constant exercise and a good, clean diet.
i suggest getting into a rhythm before dropping a bunch of cash on protein powders and pills. if you really feel the need, get a quality whey protein (one that's low in refined carbohydrates). for muscle recovery, get glutamine, but go for the powder instead of the pills as it's more easily absorbed. L-arginine is also a good idea for several reasons (do a quick search to see why).
the best time for sugar intake is with your shake/meal immediately following your workout (within one hour). http://www.intense-workout.com/p…
drink plenty of water (a half gallon to a gallon a day) and make sure you get enough quality sleep as this is when your body repairs itself.
good luck!

i used to take a lot of whey protein shakes (only whey, not weight gainers) for about 3 years. i stopped taking them and i have not lost any muscle and to be honest i dont think they made any difference at all. in fact i think they made me put on a bit of weight/fat, not muscle, because now i look more cut/defined. people think i look bigger now then before though because im more lean - abs stand out more etc. i do cycle on creatine (1 month on, 1 off) and thats it. best thing to do is eat good healthy food with carbs and protein. quinoa is really good too as it contains a complete protein profile.

you could try GOMAD (gallon of milk a day) some people swear by it.
the standard for protein that most agree on is 1-1.5 grams per pound of body weight.
also, your 1000 calories is a bit arbitrary. find your mainenance calories based on your weight and activity level (there are several resources you can google for this simple math), then add 500 to that.
then you just need a good routine, perhaps a 5-day split working out your entire body and combining both isolation and compound exercises.
