The old logo did fucking suck though, just because it's familiar doesn't mean it was good.

The old logo was perhaps out of date but it was not a bad one. It lasted many years.
The new logo I think it has taken a few steps back in a design point of view.
I think an update or a design with the same feeling wouldve have a better response.
I also wonder, who did it? How much? and how would the public take it?
This year seems to be the year of 'ugly' or 'bad' logos, for example, itunes

i'm guessing it was wither Laird & Partners or Gap's in-house designers. but maybe more likely the directors 'creative' son or daughter.

I think humanity is running out of ideas. When all other options have been exhausted, only bad remains.

I see the new logo change as a market move.
a couple weeks ago Gap issued out a groupon that literally shut down the groupon site. the deal was $25 off of a purchase of $50 or more.
a few weeks later the released this logo which was a big deal on its own. since GAP Inc. hasn't changed its logo in something like 30 years.
The generic look could attribute to a brand repositioning to a more price conscious consumer. Competitors include; J. Crew Group, Inc., American Eagle Outfitters, Inc.The TJX Companies, Inc. all of which are advertise their brand label. In this budget crunch economy Gap Inc. may have to move to a wider demographic to stay competitive with the Targets, Walmarts and H&Ms
just a thought...

Plash, I can understand that they were going for a price conscious consumer. That is why they should have repositioned the brand. Changed the voice of it. But not change the entire thing except the name. This is a hot mess, and worse yet the loyal customers that they had believed in that brand and it was an icon that was representative of something proud to own. Gap clothes weren't necessarily cheap, this logo looks and feels cheap. This logo feels outlet bargain bin cheap, how would this help move clothing in-store in-mall. I don't see it. I see this strategically as a mess because they were betting on their brands strength. But I'd agree with you they needed to update their brand not change everything except the name itself.

Gap Inc.does have successful brands.
Old Navy - which is a heavy hitter and introduced the tv spots that feature no contract mannequins.
Banana Republic - their still strong accessible luxury brand.
Piper Line - Shoes and handbags portal
Athleta - Sports line aimed for womenPiperline and Athleta are more portal brands, steering traffic to and from. sitting ion a sub catogory
But Banana Republic and Old Navy are two excellent clothing brands that do hold their market value. It would seem GAP is the weaker of the 3 and would require tweaking.
also mind that at the end of 2009 the company had 2.3 billion in cash and zero debt. so this is not a desperate move. (cit: p:16, Gap Inc. 2009 annual report)
