the stylesheet is missing – isn't it?

The long and short of it is that it's Build ffs, I'm pretty certain that he has long established himself and does not rely on his web presence to gain new business... He could have a video of himself shitting on one of his cats and I doubt it's going to affect clients coming to him to provide a visual solution that has his individual approach attached to it...
To this point —
"However - I think that any designed interface needs to solve problems, rather than present users with difficulties."It's definitely a valid point of view, but also potentially quite limiting, as designers, if we don't challenge conventions and especially in cases like a personal portfolio site, push people out of their comfort zones then we're missing a big opportunity... People are complacent, society is lazy, if we don't continue to push things that are possibly outside of standard convention then all we are doing is reinforcing the notion that it's ok to not have to think about what we're doing... The 2 click society is not one that I believe is worth investing in...

"The 2 click society is not one that I believe is worth investing in..."
I agree with most of what you say; although I'd argue that the '2 click society' is the society we live in, and if we want to invest in something that's grounded in reality, we have to invest in it. If we're going to rebel and try to create a reaction against it, I think Sagmeister's site is a good example.
I think Sagmeister's website is so completely off-kilter that I it's almost impossible to take it seriously. I think the site is badly designed in a conventional sense, but it challenges users through juxtapositions; e.g. a visual vocabulary's introduced for the buttons - but rather than keep their use consistent, the position, colouring and direction changes haphazardly. I think it's almost a two finger salute to the world - he understandably doesn't get business from a website because he's so well known. I come away with the impression that he doesn't 'do' websites, but that's okay - he's playing with the format and challenging expectations.
But Build _does_ do websites and I'm not sure what's being challenged. My misgivings came about because I wanted to be able to view the work in a less intrusive setting. Text on images does my head in.
Anyway, having said this, I can now see the error of my ways. I persevered and after putting in a bit of work I can see what you mean - it doesn't matter so much what the site is like, because the work is inspirational.
I reckon it's rare to see so much individual personality infused with each project ... Feels like a lot of the identities have been conceived as unique characters; inventive, personal and witty ... possessing the kind of idiosyncrasies you might think of when you're describing a person you know. Visually, there's nothing too excessive going on, but it's always distinctive - and it all consistently fits with the larger body of work and looks fresh. Good stuff indeed.

A site which generates a discussion is always a winner in my eyes. So well done for that reason alone.
In my opinion there are too many ideas thrown into the mix, too many treatments, type ideas, background fades, photo shoots etc. It all removes the focus from what is actually truly amazing: their print work. The digital work is not their strength IMHO and this sort of confirms it.
I feel the same thing happened with the Jason Tozer photography site where all I could see or remembered afterwards was a repeated typographic background rather than his actual work. The usability is not amazing, but then I again, I think that is a conscious decision on their behalf.

from the about page:
"Michael produced some of the best-known & seminal works of tDR that, although always anonymous, became well-known amongst followers of the studio."
And further shpeel about Nicky Place who worked on the game Wipeout which "became widely acknowledged as the ‘game that made gaming cool’."
Wow, we owe a lot to this pair if we believe what they are saying about themselves in the 3rd person.

i cant be assed to work out how this site works and find the work that everyone is saying is oh so inspiring and groundbreaking.
and if i, a designer, cant be assed to delve any further then why would any potential clients?
they obviously ride on their name and presented portfolio (in person/creds) and not via their website.
its a shocking way to showcase work.

Y'know, I don't think the Hide/Show was there when this first hit the EC. If it was I think we all would have noticed it, no?
