Regarding "wanker":
About 12 years ago, during the summer before my junior year of college, I worked on a paint crew. At first, I didn't talk too much to the other guys, as I was a soft, academic music major type, and they were all tough hairy knuckle types. But one day, they were trying to rustle me into conversation. They knew I was into jazz, and someone asked "What do you think of Kenny G?"
Viciously, I spat "KENNY G IS A WANKER!!" Use of the word wanker and my militant stance on the question garnered much laughter, and at that moment solidified opinions that there was a new amusing presence on the crew. Overall, it was a good summer.Point is, that was 1997, and I used the word "wanker" frequently in the following year or two. it is entirely possible that any current hipster overusage of the term is, at least in part, my fault.
I am sorry.

i work in design for almost 12 years. and i was never ever interested soo much like some of you guys in the person behind a design i saw on the web or a magazine.

Khurram it was tool not korn... but Adam Jones taught me something very important that day... that I need to love the work just as much as the client did... that if I was making work for them and not for me... something would be lost.
I respect your thoughts and opinions and I don't mind the screensaver reference... good screensavers are hard to make. screensavers aren't born out of nothing. Talented people make them.
I've done screensavers... so has Michael Place. but because there are a lot of bad screensavers doesn't make screensavers as a whole a bad word.
word.

A number of years ago I friend to a friend's experimental music concert. Being a fan of many things avant garde I had no real expectations. But I hated it. Really hated it. He asked me later what i thought, and I was honest. Instead of being bummed out, he actually beamed at me and said "I'm so happy you had a strong reaction." That always stuck with me.
What I actually think about Mr. Davis' work is irrelevant. Almost as irrelevant as my own work so far in life. But hot damn I am endlessly impressed by someone who finds something, anything, that somehow resonates with a larger population. How incredible that must feel. It must feel that way becasue every time i see someone who has acheived that level of recognition for whatever reason, and no matter what I think of it, I still mutter "motherfucker" under my breath. As I am sure most everyone else does. Jealousy makes no exceptions for taste.
I'll take getting trounced in an industry rag over a mild pat on the head from a client any day of the week.

I don't think it's a case of anything vs anything here, we're just rapping, killing time, avoiding the inevitable... isn't that what we do here day in and day out?

Khurram... I don't think I took the article out of context I read the whole damn thing and he hated everybody... with the major exception of the *person* who worked on the Obama campaign... he even made the article more about Obama than the designer - "Obama saves type conference" NO "Sol Sender saves type conference"
"it seemed as though TYPO Berlin had been hijacked by the worst kinds of Americans." I wasn't even singled out... so was Esther Dyson... Chip Kidd, etc.
YES that's my problem... 1 guy goes to a type conference and his opinion is not SUM of all in attendance. so what's valid ? a media publication that reports non-biased on the SUM of all in attendance... or the opinion of 1 Wanker with a chip on his shoulder ? this isn't just a blog post it was in the mag.
I guess I'd take it better if it came from someone within our respected field... like M. Place... Davis is a douche... shit... it's true then... better throw in the towel for Cage Fighting.

Its always easier to be critical of someone when no one knows who you are.

thanks for the comments... took me a bit to read.
well said chossy... I do find joy in the things I make.
Etype ? is that comment directed towards me ? who makes my new stuff ? I just glanced over my shoulder and there's only 1 person sitting in my studio... and I'm wearing his underwear.

What I want to make clear there is that I was just referring to commercial design, there's a world of difference between commercial, and/or personal/academic pursuits..
I'm overall a bit sick with the way agencies and individuals waste other peoples money to fulfill their own desires. I reckon many of these misguided individuals do think they're doing the right thing and fuck, if they don't someone else will.. I was having a chat with a friend a while back and she's telling me about this grand online/experiential project she's been working on, a massive physical setup with all these gizmos that can all be manipulated and controlled via some online interface.. I was mesmerized by the grandeur and the really creative thinking that went into the whole thing, but by the end of her description I was like, "sorry, what was this actually for again?" I don't mean to slag her off at all as I think it was somewhat relevant for the client and project, but it did seem a bit more about them and possibly the chance of winning an award from it..
I'm also not really saying commercial graphic is solely about communication, and even then, style alone is some sort of communication right? Using generative art by Josh davis on the cover of your magazine is communicating something loud and clear — "if you think this is cool, wait until you see what's inside"
I have no problems with what Josh is/was and will do, but for me, it is actually art.. I like the fact that it involves new techniques and he's looking for new ways to create self-indulgent work [sold for a price] good on ya, nothing wrong with being enterprising..
It's a very blurry line for me personally, but these types of projects, and ones by the likes of yugop, et al are all kinda cool for for the sake of doing something that hasn't been done. But at the end of the day it's like, so what? What has this done for us? Are we as people better for it, have our lives been enriched?
Where I do see beneficial non-commercial graphic design is much more on the infographical side of things, where designers and creatives are looking at things like systems, networks and patterns, ultimately these types of projects will help us better understand each other and how the world around us actually works [or doesn't]
fuck me, I'm not sure any of that made a lick of sense, but whatever, I've got some terribly boring, marketeer-led campaign to work on...

^^ Horp - fair point. In CR's defence wasn't the article damning the lineup of speakers at a type conference? Regardless of JD's standing in general, it's a stretch to consider him in any way a typographer. I like his work too, but typography it surely is not.
