Sci Fi is coming off the best year in its history.
Nevertheless, there was always a sneaking suspicion that the name was holding the network back.
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.
Mr. Brooks said that when people who say they don’t like science fiction enjoy a film like “Star Wars,” they don’t think it’s science fiction; they think it’s a good movie.
“We spent a lot of time in the ’90s trying to distance the network from science fiction, which is largely why it’s called Sci Fi,” Mr. Brooks said. “It’s somewhat cooler and better than the name ‘Science Fiction.’ But even the name Sci Fi is limiting.”

I don't mind the new branding, but it doesn't remind me of what television shows and films are on that channel.

sufy?
also why go with purple as primary brand colour? i just associate that with e4 now. I'd love to know how it still relates to the sci-fi genre also. perhaps the long shadows are a little evocative but there isn't even a lens flare on there :-P
- It was there primary colour already. Also this is a US channel so E4 has no relevance.gradiate
- Purple and green, when used correctly can = slime and aliens, or new technology.juhls
- And yeah, I think it was already their colour, so it's fine.juhls
- That's just my opinion though. I'm sure other people would argue for blue, but purple is used less frequently.juhls

Naming by someone else. Branding by Proud.

I don't understand why it has been changed to read "SyFy". Last I checked, science wasn't spelled with a "Y", nor was fiction.
The whole thing bothers me.
- Jnr_Madison0
They couldn't register the old name, hence the change I think.
- too generic?
designbot - Yeah, hard to trademark 'science fiction'Jnr_Madison
- It's about going beyond SciFi content and the image that SciFi brings in people's minds.gradiate
- But that's like the Family channel and other channels with really simple names, isn't it?juhls
- I'd have to read up about who actually has things registered though.juhls
- that makes sense from a legal standpoint, but that's about it imo.designbot
- too generic?
- designbot0
- was that purple dot always up there? i don't think i ever noticed7point34

i just don't think you have given the brand any identity what so ever. but hey tv is about dumbing-down right?
- There is a lot of shit on TV, but there are many great things about it too. Idiotic programming isn't the gist of it.juhls
- i think you've missed my point. i was implying that syfy should be the sort of channel that promotes more sophisticated entertainment and as such it would be nice to have a brand that was reflective of this.jabblon
- I would love to see more sophisticated branding, but why it is so different from every other channel?juhls
- wouldn't you want your channel to stand out somewhat in such a competitive market?jabblon
- iheartfun0
it still does not turn me on to watch that station....
- baseline_shift0
i love how landor wiped their hands clean of this one...
- designbot0
unfortunately you will no longer see uranus in the logo...
- attentionspan0
i liked it better the first time i saw it, but now it just looks something made by designers coz they think its neat, not much sci-fi over this identity at all
- not that the older one was better looks like a sattelit dish dealer :oattentionspan
- Which is the idea.gradiate
- partially you are right, but it could be a bit more ambiguousattentionspan
- it's a shitty idea.TheBlueOne

Total bullshit on the "The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular". Probably said by some asshole over the age of fifty. Science fiction is mainstream and cool these days, as cool as anything else. (*takes glance at highest grossing movies last ten years..lots of scifi there)
This SyFy thing is fucking stupid...why would the "science fiction" channel want to distance itself from, you know, Science Fiction? Do they want to be as fucking vapid as say Mtv distancing itself from playing actual music? It seems so..
It's all fucking Orwellian in a sad, pathetic way. Fuck you 21st century marketers. Fuck you and whatever branded vehicle you drove in on. Die of anal cancer.
It's fucking Science Fiction you retards.
- LOLdesignbot
- Noticed you used "anal cancer" there. Been waitin for that.harlequino
