What is the world's obsession with this guy? What am I not understanding? (I'm sure there is actually a perfectly good rationale to his work - im just not seeing it for its commercial and popular value)

Happy birthday, Terry Richardson, from all your old colleages at Citibank (95-97).

A bit like evolution, then ?....
- sikma0
it has little or nothing to do with him. it's all about his subject matter.

- lastnightsparty... what a total bunch of cunts.mikotondria3
- Merlins chic pics are way hotter, tan and sexy, all of Terry's chics look like they have been rode hard and hung up wet.robotron3k

for instance. if someone tomorrow took over for terry
(used a point and shoot camera to photograph sweaty barely legal hoes in knee high socks)
would you notice?
- you wouldn't. but you would still love the photos.sikma
- I think it already has happened no?robotron3k

Trying to figure out the redline here... was it Keiichi Nitta who first stole it, then Terry stole it from him, then american appareal from Terry?

I could almost site Jeff Koons' photo-series with his wife, but atleast he BOTHERED to light it and set it

it's hard to find those Yashica T5 on ebay to be a great photog like Terry

IMHO
His popularity is rooted in a "I couldn't be bothered" attitude. Which people who party all time eventually adopt as a method of coping with their shitty existence. This also explains why he's so popular with AA and Vice Mag.

okay - I REALLY was trying to figure out if this guy was some kind of genius and I just 'wasn't getting it'. This has helped a lot - thanks guys

I think there's something to be said about the candid, voyeuristic qualities of his photography... but really, it neither displays a technical proficiency or a deep understanding of composition. I think sikma nailed it on the head though.
I'd imagine when you get caught up with certain celebrity drug circles and one night you wind up in with a camera in your hand and a bunch of half-hearted wtf-was-I-thinking shots and it happens enough times some bimbo celebrity is bound to point and cluck, "Oh hey look guy with camera must be a photographer! Please, take a picture of my snatch or better yet, while I blow you!"

all this hate being spouted - ill end by saying that Im not a big fan of his work... although it has been a guilty pleasure from time-to-time - I just dont understand what is so unique about his work that the NY elite and the fashion world are clinging to him like his was warhol?
THAT BEING SAID - I'd KILL to have his lifestyle :-)
- kojikabuto0
he used to bang Susan Eldridge (fucker)

he actually has a great deal of work that's very technically lit and composed, shot on medium format digital, etc.
he's just famous for the snap shot style.

There's a history to his work that is probably lost on most people who only see his stuff now. At the point where he emerged, fashion photography for high end periodicals was the reserve of the rich old school who's work was always meticulous, shot on 10x8 dark slide, featuring perfectly poised, styled, lit beauty. So it was against that norm that he stood out as being totally fresh, ireverent, anarchic, exciting, and more real... immediately casting the old school David Baileys etc in a new light as old men with outdated methods who were not representing the younger aspirational generations who were growing into titles such as Vogue.
So dramatic and successful was his style that he was almost immediately emulated by anyone who had a Contax compact, a ring flash, and a party to attend, so now, twenty years later, its very easy to look at is stuff and wonder what the fuss is about.
