There's a history to his work that is probably lost on most people who only see his stuff now. At the point where he emerged, fashion photography for high end periodicals was the reserve of the rich old school who's work was always meticulous, shot on 10x8 dark slide, featuring perfectly poised, styled, lit beauty. So it was against that norm that he stood out as being totally fresh, ireverent, anarchic, exciting, and more real... immediately casting the old school David Baileys etc in a new light as old men with outdated methods who were not representing the younger aspirational generations who were growing into titles such as Vogue.

So dramatic and successful was his style that he was almost immediately emulated by anyone who had a Contax compact, a ring flash, and a party to attend, so now, twenty years later, its very easy to look at is stuff and wonder what the fuss is about.

    • Fancy way of saying didn't bring expensive photoequipment to a party :DPeter
