I've just read the job description for the job at Hugo & Cat, London on the Job board.
http://www.qbn.com/jobs/?krop_jo…
I'd be really interested to see who gets that job, because not only are they going to be a master with "Extreme proficiency" of AS2/3 "(including OOP concepts, XML data exchange and programmatic animation)" but....
they'll also be a master of animation "with an almost real life quality " and a designer to boot "Strong design and motion graphics / animation skills.".wow. that person is going to be a legend. I'd be really interested to know that person's education / work background. do you do a degree in computer science/programming, then a degree in design then a degree in animation???
I've often wondered what I should concentrate on, flash dev or just design or just animation... trying to balance all 3 means I'm only become average at them all: still using AS1 (which does the job fine i think for what i need to do), tinkered with animation and dabbled with design: www.feliz.co.uk
I can totally understand why a client needs just one person who can do several jobs amazingly well, but if you are that amazing at all 3 and then why would you want to work full time rather than freelance or run your own agency... hmm...

People always exaggerate on job postings, most people are a let down... as for this page... is it me, or is that the worst selction of colours on one page ever!

They'll most likely find a 'Jack of all trades, master of none'.

thanks Leigh.

While I somewhat agree with somewhat of some of what you have just said, I don't understand when people stand under the belief that you either have to be a jack of all trades or a master of one. I believe you can excel in more than one thing excellently except if you accept the acceptance of this excerpt.

cnt say i rate the huga+cat site
i go by the theory that if the company looks crap on the web, then them asking for the best of the best is abit of a joke

Thanks for the link. I'm starting on Monday.

yes, i too think it's true u can be good at most things, but... in this field where the technology changes so quickly as soon as you master one thing it becomes out of date. i can imagine a baker being amazing at making breads, go home and be an amazing oil painter and then play piano amazing well. cos all those learned things remain constant and over time u can become a master of them.
but as soon as i master as3... there'll be as4 coming out. I did think I was pretty good at flash animation, but now cs4 means I need to relearn and rethink my timeline technique. etc... so i think when it comes to technology skills, to be top it feels like u need to focus on just one thing so u can keep up to date with it.
for example, Taka(fladdict.net/blog) from tha.jp is an amazing thinker and flash developer. but would you hire him for design work and to make "an almost real life" animation?
that's why I wondered what the persons background would be, and their portfolio if they matched that description.

mostly... I agree with WeLoveNoise.

They're dreaming if they think that candidate exists

I don't think your example is accurate, think about it more like an architect/painter/constructor. As you start working for larger agencies you end up concentrating more on one skill and it is up to you to keep up with the other.
If you look at smaller agencies (less than 10 employees) you will soon find that there are a handfull talented individuals that can excel at different skills. I know because I have had the privilege to work with one who was great a designing then taking that design to production and was great at 3D, not only that but couple mornings a week he was a teacher at the local college where he taught 3D and programming.
Can everyone do that? of course not, but you can't deny that such people exist and the reason why you might not see them around these kind of boards or other places is because rather than making pretty resumes where they toot their own horn they are improving their many skills they already have.
Also just as a lot of people lie on their resumes, some companies lie on what they need to get more for their money.

still coding in AS1?... how long as AS3 been out? more than a year? Also, if you have ever worked with AFX you can see that the timeline is the same as the new Flash Timeline so there is not a huge learning curve for that.
Just talk to beta testers for the adobe product (close beta that is), you have to play with software that is not released to the public yet and you are expected to test it as if it was in production mode. Can everyone do it? of course not, that is why the beta testing is just for certain individuals and not everyone is invited. Just imagine, people were testing AS3 months before people even know there was going to be a switch, people were testing the timeline behavior of CS4 before you even know it existed. :)
- AS3 - 4 yearsmaximillion_
- to the public that is. Adobe have been working on AS4 what? a year already?fusionpixel

yeah, i like AS1, i'm learning AS3 now. in most cases AS1 does the job fine.
and yes I know the timeline is the same in cs4 as afx so it's no real problem, just all my tricks and work methods for the previous version of flash are now redundant. where as a piano players method of playing a trill remains for each piano he plays on, it doesn't become redundant once he gets a korg synth... the piano player over years can develop his craft as the tool remain the same.
n this industry the tools keep changing, updating. so i was jsut thinking, at what cost it is to our craft? Soon a designer's biggest skill will be his/hers ability to keep up to date with the technology rather than their ability to make good designs.
- fusionpixel0
keeping up with the technology eventually becomes part of you, a designer/programmer will stop learning when ever he/she decides to.
Some choose to stop as soon as they leave the classroom from college while some others never stop, they write tutorials/books/teach and so on.

more in general terms, i seen a few one which says. you must have these skills. and ofcourse its a skill set starting from A to Z. lol. right. there might be a few who has it, but i am sure they allready takend.
