yes, i too think it's true u can be good at most things, but... in this field where the technology changes so quickly as soon as you master one thing it becomes out of date. i can imagine a baker being amazing at making breads, go home and be an amazing oil painter and then play piano amazing well. cos all those learned things remain constant and over time u can become a master of them.
but as soon as i master as3... there'll be as4 coming out. I did think I was pretty good at flash animation, but now cs4 means I need to relearn and rethink my timeline technique. etc... so i think when it comes to technology skills, to be top it feels like u need to focus on just one thing so u can keep up to date with it.
for example, Taka(fladdict.net/blog) from tha.jp is an amazing thinker and flash developer. but would you hire him for design work and to make "an almost real life" animation?
that's why I wondered what the persons background would be, and their portfolio if they matched that description.
