I bartended my way through college (that and hustling pool but that's another story). After doing that I'd like to consider myself a good tipper because I know firsthand how absolutely shitty of a job it is to serve 80% of the filth that used to come into the restaurant.

- This steak is Medium... I SAID MEDIUM WITH A TOUCH OF PINK AND 150 DEGREES!
- This beer tastes flat, gimmie another! Me: Uh, but sir you drank the whole beer.Waitstaff and bartenders are miserable because they have to serve miserable people. It's a vicious cycle.

I am not European. I am not cheap. This attitude is the problem:
But if I'm on point and make you an order of 4 mixed drinks and pop 4 different beers for you and you don't tip, you better only order bottled beer or just don't come back to my bar at all or else you'll be drinking 90 mixer/10 alcohol drinks for the rest of the night.
Tips are 100% expected and judged. I've got news for you, they are voluntary.
- And you're a cheap fuck.dirtydesign
- You are cheap.hedge
- tips are not 100% expected. If you can't afford to go out and get served then you should stay your ass home.Point5

I used to work in a pizza shop. When dealing with people like you, I'd wipe my ass with my hand before pounding the dough. Then others would pick their nose and add it to the pie. So enjoy that...

I love how were continue the vicious cycle of allowing establishments to pay their employees poorly since we will supplement it with tips. Even if they suck.
I am sorry, I will tip and tip well, if it deserved. If it was good, but nothing special, then 15%.
If you're rude, don't refill drinks, clear dishes etc.and there is no good reason (ie. crazy busy and short staffed) then you get nothing. And for those who worry about what you might get going back, if you have a shite dining experience... why would you go back?I am tired of it. I am supposed to tip everyone, regardless of service - waiting staff, taxis, shuttles, bellmen, delivery people,.doorman, barber. Do a GOOD job, you get rewarded. It's not a right.
I loved my trip to the UK. They actually appreciated tips, and I was rewarded with even better service for doing so. It wasn't expected of me to just do it. I tipped the bar staff, and they would serve me ahead of everyone else at the bar. I tipped my bellman at the hotel for prompt service and he kindly gave us some valuable insight into the city for our day.
My recent trip to SF, I had a lot of great waiting staff and we tipped well. I know if that city they rely on their tips, and they earned them.
The way it should be. One thing I don't do though, is figure the tip excluding alcohol. I dislike that, I tip on the whole total.

i hate the system of tipping. why not include the cost of servicing into the price structure and have employers pay properly to their employees.
- YOU'RE BREAKING THE 4TH WALL!7point34
- bad tips weed out the bad employees. if you are a good server, you are rewarded.TeganTorch

That's how it works at many high-end restaurants and pretty much all high-end hotels.

It's a bullshit system. I no longer will put up with it. I love how it has gotten where even counter people set up their Jar as if they deserve some of my ca$h?
waitstaff: Hi can I get you anything else?
me: Nope and I don't tip.

Me too

If I get great service I will tip well because that person went above and beyond what is expected.
If service is just so-so, I will still tip because that person is earning a shit wage.
If I get poor service, I will not tip at all.
it's a very simple formula. Being in a tip earning position at a busy establishment is a great job because you have the potential to earn proportionally to the amount of effort you put into your job. Non-tippers are the minority so it's really not too big of a deal. For every 20 people that don't during the night, there's someone that will drop a hundo or two on the bar to even it out.

I was a huge tipper. Now I do not tip at all.
Me: Hey can I get this wrapped to go?

I'm new to this whole tipping culture. I don't mind tipping in restaurants where the staff have to take your order, carry drinks, refill them, fetch salt and all that. But I don't get tipping in bars. If I order a beer and all someone does is use a bottle opener and hand it to me why should I tip them? There's no skill in that at all. Just pay the staff properly and be done with it! I still do tip in bars though... I'm afraid what will happen if I don't!
I saw a barmaid scream at a customer once "Where's my F*&King tip!".
- tgqt0
It's a bunch of crap. Don't tip anymore. But don't be sheepish about it. I'll start tipping again when I start getting tipped for 'doing my job' at an acceptable level.

You need to spend some time in a non-service oriented culture. then you'll appreciate the subjective, tipping system. Oh, and keep in mind that "waiter/waitress" wages are different than other minimums (to account for tipping) here in the US.

Wow, you don't tip?
You're freakin crazy man.
God you're just insane!
