i received extraordinarily rude, racist service in times square once.
a friend of mine who happened to be black was ignored, patronized and treated very poorly. it was astounding. fairly sure the waiter was gay, which made it even more outrageous. i remember thinking: imagine all the shit you've had to put up with from bigots and you're acting bigoted towards another race?
i left him a scientology pamphlet that someone had handed me earlier that day. that was his tip.

tgqt, you've obviously never waited tables. In the U.S., wait staff makes below minimum wage because it is assumed the bulk of their income will be tips. If you don't want to help some kid make ends meet, especially if they do a good job, then be my guest. But, if you make it known on an international forum that you are uncharitable and stingy, then you will get an earful my friend.

I will almost always give a bartender an extra buck if I order a beer. The more I am thinking about this, if the bar is busy, I am not going to do that anymore. You can hand out 100 beers in an hour, if everyone tipped you a buck you are now making plumber money and have no real marketable skill.
- i generally tip a buck for the first one and then the other tips are decided by how quickly i am served7point34

I have waited tables and tended bar for a combined 8 years. I am rallying support for these poor souls.
The gov't does not treat tips in the same way anymore and it is high time that owners of establishments started treating these employees with the proper respect they deserve.
This is a movement.
Oh, and Moth...I do not tip begrudgingly, i don't tip at all.
Off to lunch in NYC where I will stiff the waitstaff after running them all over hell. I know exactly what to ask for to make them double and triple trip to the table because I have so much restaurant experience.
I will continue to terrorize an additional waitstaff member on a subsequent meal for every noob that suggest I never worked in a restaurant and/ or have had shit handed to me.
If you work in a midtown lunch establishment you better put on your trackshoes.

this is a movement? would have gotten more support with something more original like "save the whales" or something

I give 20% or a little more. If I give 15% it's that I'm strapped for cash.

And I go like this:
10$ or less 2$
20$ or less 3 or 4$
30$ or so 5-8$
40$ or so 10$And like whatever, I usually never dine over 15$ though.

For my part I have not suggested that anything has been handed to you; if you really have waiting experience then I stand corrected, though I find it incredibly hard to believe that given your attitude.
This is not a movement, it's a rant. If you want to instigate true change, don't post on QBN. Get the attention of your reps in Congress/Senate. I have no problem with the idea of ditching tips if waiters/waitresses get paid more; but I say pay them more FIRST, then get rid of tips, as opposed to stiffing some kid who needs the money, simply because you have a gripe with the tipping system.

Just had lunch....a nice little counter place in midtown....NO TIP.

I must bring up the question. We all comment how poorly wait staff gets paid and tips make their job viable. But there are MANY people also making minimum wage that get no tips -- cashiers, stock staff, fast food workers. So is it really a valid argument? I am not saying no tips, just noticing the double-standard there.
- wait staff can get less than minimum wage though.mrdobolina
- due to tips.mrdobolina
- I just didn't think it was legal to pay below minimum wage. Maybe it's different in Canada.ETM
- I think it is. It doesn't make sense that people are living off tips.Jaline
- "I think it is" = tipping could be different in Canada, as you mentioned.Jaline
- at least 2.13 an hour for america... the rest is tips7point34

you got me there sikma....In addition to being a loser [pointed out in another thread] I have not considered this when creating my movement.
I will report back.....but I wouldn't count on me having anything but theory as the probability of me actually securing a date is pretty out there.

With my tattoos = unintelligence thread back in the open I figured it would be a good time to double back on my no tipping thread.
