PC to MAC convert 3636 Responses

Hey,
I'm seriously considering buying a Macbook Pro soon.I've been on PC my whole life/career but I think it's time I give in and treat myself to a better look/running computer.
I have a few questions.
What are the best looking/usable apps out there for mac? I love the UI and the feel of the OS, it's probably my biggest reason for converting.
Will I have to re-buy all of my software? Any way you know of to transfer licenses for Adobe(expensive) programs? If not this could be an issue as it will raise the cost of converting by more than a thousand dollars. (ouch)
Why should I buy a 15in over a 17in? And not because of cost. Is 2 inches really that much more of a pain in the ass?
Should I wait? There are a lot of posts in tech blogs with rumors of a new macbook coming out. With an aluminum case, glass touchpad, etc. What do you think about this?

Utopian, another huge reason I'm getting a MacBOOK pro is because I'm tired of being stuck in the house.
My PC based laptop broke a while back (it did last for about 4 years) and I've been grounded ever since.
Austin is a beautiful city to work outside in, and that's my main motive for buying.

1) That depends on what you want them to do, question is too vague
2) yes, I'm not sure about how to transfer licenses, some apps have installers for both, mac and pc, but not all, so depends on the software maybe.3) if you want portability get a 15 laptop, if you are staying on a desk, then either a 17 laptop or a desktop.
4) if you need it now, get it now. When you are in the mac world, "they" are waiting on "you" to buy something before they release an update. You can never have the latest thing for more than a few weeks.

If you travel a lot get the 15in but if you will sit at a desk a lot get the 17in and get a laptop stand for your desk, it will feel more like a desktop on top of being portable (although heavy at 17in). Plus you get more screen resolution in the 17in model. Its the one I would get.
As for timing there's a few things to consider. First, your best resource is http://buyersguide.macrumors.com… for info on when the new ones are coming out.
Second, we're right around September when Apple generally makes their biggest moves in laptops since its close to school starting. The current rumors indicate that there might be aluminum macbooks that look more like the current iMacs AND they might have a glass touch pad with crazy iPhone and Air style multitouch things going on. This is all speculation though and the only thing you can count on is that you will get a slightly faster, better equipped version of the current model, possibly with an aluminum enclosure.
The app thing is a by company thing so you should contact the companies you have software from and see what their policy is. I don't think you'll have to do much more than pay a nominal fee for each.

What kind of stuff do you do? What kind of apps are you looking for?

ninja,
Thanks..
I can wait until after September. Hopefully at least by them we'll have a better idea of if/when a new macbook will be coming out.I understand technology is always changing. But if it's a matter of months when making a $3k+ investment, I think it's worth it.

Jotane if you have the serials of your adobe products all you have to do is get a reserialization for your new adobe mac version. I did it it cost me the maiing and like 10 bucks. I'd do it if I were you. I dont suggest working on a mac laptop for design though. Get the tower :)

Check this list for software:

Also, macupdate does a yearly bundle where you'll get around 10 apps for a ridiculous discount and you get some great stuff (along with some fluff).

Thanks Ninja, you've been a lot of help.
Iggy,
Great info, I'll have to look more into it when the time comes.
The design I do isn't too heavy. Mostly just illustration or tweaking designs sent to me from my designers.
The heaviest stuff will be photo manipulation. I may reserve my powerful PC tower for all photography needs though.

To follow up: The display quality isn't very good on the 17", the lighting is rarely even and it only gets worse over time. Granted, mine is a pre-LED model but from what I've heard it hasn't gone away completely. Verdict: If you don't need 17", don't bother. If you do need it, you're probably better off getting a decent external one. I bought it just because getting an external monitor wasn't really an option for me, but I do wish I could've just gotten 15" and been okay.
