free alternatives to bundled/paid software

and you may wish to have look at some of the suggest software lists:

As far as cross-platforming goes I go back and forth from pc-mac all the time - especially with adobe files and software. The biggest problem I run in to is not having the same fonts machine-to-machine, but that's minor. Outside of that the only real problems I have are with drives that are formatted for NTFS.

I have a 15" macbook pro with the glossy display, 2.2ghz intel processor, 2gb ram, 160 gb hdd, dvd-r, firewire, usb 2.0 and this puppy runs circles around my pc - simply because the workflow is that much better. As for software... OSX is suprisingly abundant with everyday productivity software... for more serious needs you should look to the apple library of software, although you can find most anything third-party too.

some of my favorite free apps:
Smultron: html editing
Cyberduck: ftp
NetNewsWire: rss
Journler 2.5.3: note organization
Bean: textedit replacement
Linotype Font Explore: font love
Alarm Clock: obvious
iScrobbler v1.2.1: last.fm updates
Salling Clicker: trigger applescripts w/ bluetooth phoneAlso it's not free but look into Saft for Safari. Totally worth it.

I have a macpro 15", I dont even use the actual display, I have an external 22" display. Also there are cooler and less inexpensive laptop carry bags for a 15" apple.

I have had both. I think that if you need to do a lot of work on the road, get the 17. You will appreciate the extra pixels. On the other hand, if you mostly work at a desk where you can use a second monitor, get the 15. It is more portable and more than fine if you just need to communicate, surf and do the occasional bit of work on the road. Just my opinion though.
As for waiting/not waiting... well there is always something new coming out with apple but the next one "should" be a whole new design. That is good and bad. The good is that there will be lots of new cool things about it but usually the first gen has some problems.

go with the 15" and then upgrade the RAM. needs at least 2GB. if possible, get 4GB.
- if your on a budget, don't buy the upgrade at the apple store. get it from macsales or someone eles.akrokdesign
- even if you have the money, get it from crucial ram I would say.
apple steals from you every chance they haveMeeklo - they're not as bad as they used to be... though still a bit more.cramdesign
- they're bad. never upgrade ram at apple, they have the same ram you buy elsewhere, only ridiculously pricedrafalski

I'm going to burn andtrash the existent pcs I still have at home bunch of useless trash. 30 seconds after formatting, virus spread all over, and then more virus once I install an anti-virus, so they can make sure I have to get 2 upgrades... fuck Micro$oft. already ruined my network once, and I have to change constantly passwords to access my private bank/ accounts / ftps / -
so... get a mac even if it's a mac mini... still worth any expensive pc setup, plus the crap operative system

You can always be one of those guys on a mac that runs windows on it..

I know for sure you can cross platform from PC to Mac for Adobe software, see Photoshop Manager John Nack's blog at:
http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/200…
Usually, you will have to pay for the price of the new CD set/shipping, but that won't be very much.

To follow up: The display quality isn't very good on the 17", the lighting is rarely even and it only gets worse over time. Granted, mine is a pre-LED model but from what I've heard it hasn't gone away completely. Verdict: If you don't need 17", don't bother. If you do need it, you're probably better off getting a decent external one. I bought it just because getting an external monitor wasn't really an option for me, but I do wish I could've just gotten 15" and been okay.
