If you travel a lot get the 15in but if you will sit at a desk a lot get the 17in and get a laptop stand for your desk, it will feel more like a desktop on top of being portable (although heavy at 17in). Plus you get more screen resolution in the 17in model. Its the one I would get.

As for timing there's a few things to consider. First, your best resource is http://buyersguide.macrumors.com… for info on when the new ones are coming out.

Second, we're right around September when Apple generally makes their biggest moves in laptops since its close to school starting. The current rumors indicate that there might be aluminum macbooks that look more like the current iMacs AND they might have a glass touch pad with crazy iPhone and Air style multitouch things going on. This is all speculation though and the only thing you can count on is that you will get a slightly faster, better equipped version of the current model, possibly with an aluminum enclosure.

The app thing is a by company thing so you should contact the companies you have software from and see what their policy is. I don't think you'll have to do much more than pay a nominal fee for each.
