i don't really want to jump in this, but i just got to ask one simple question gramme (and forgive me if this has already been brought up. i have read through the thread on a 'clif notes' style):
do you have any close gay friends? i'm not talking about people you talk to randomly, or hang out with every once in a while. i am talking about people that you would consider a true close friend? someone you know you could confide in that was gay?

we're men, and we love sex.

I say let people live how they want, as long as they're not hurting anyone else. In a society where there isn't an official religion, I don't see how you can argue with that.
- ukit0
In other words, even if you are religious and believe it is wrong you should be in favor of full rights for gay people. Otherwise you are confusing your personal beliefs with what should be allowed in society as a whole.

Lukus, you are totally right and I can't agree more with you and what you said.
Those people who say they are christian and point the finger forgot the old saying,
do not do to others what you wouldn't like done unto you.

Pfft, the world and it's over-engorged population of humans could do with some more gay people, or that the 10% that is already having the freedom to live how it pleases.
As for labelling things 'gay' (/'ghey'?) - I remember when I first picked up on this, about 7 years ago, and I thought it terribly un-PC and crass. Now, lo, a long time later, and I'm using it myself. Though, I mean to apply to overly-effete and campy things, which I have no problem ..er.. having a problem with. I couldn't give a hoot what someone's sexuality is, but the minute they (male or female) start mincing around, air-kissing and talking about nothing other than shoes and sleb gossip, is the minute I gits ma shotgun out and start shooting for Jesus.

The irony of it. Calling people who hate gays......... er...., gay.
I can't understand how some of you think it's that simple. The more likely reason is that they're just imbeciles. They probably bash black people too - but that doesn't make them black.
- I think you are over simplifying the bigger point. And stupidity as an explanation for bigotry is also simplification.monkeyshine

^over-engorged population? Even China is predicted to run into issues after instituting the family planning program. There will be 129 million Chinese over the age of 60 as of the year 2000. By 2020, one in four will be elderly.
- 'issues' hinged on what? Economic growth? Which we've spent the last 30 years learning is unsustainable?detritus
- having less children is not the answer. We need to be smarter with our resources.designbot
- No, completely wrong. Having less children AND making better use of our resources is what we should be doing.detritus
- ok, you can make dogmatic claims all day....give me some information that is not based on your opinion.designbot
- Likewise. I can't be bothered to trawl the depths of my sources solely to fend off another opinion in a note.detritus
- The fact that you even question the obviousness of my point makes me realise you're either dogmatic or naivedetritus

Well, such fundamentalist types are not actually practicing the "fundamentals" found in the Bible (the label of fundamentalism has taken only the sadly ironic meaning of a person who is actually anything but orthodox). There's no excuse for hunting or murdering anyone for any reason, ever.
I don't think it's sensible for society to be intolerant of my views, because I'm not explicitly or implicitly doing actual harm to a single person. That being said, I've long ceased to expect sense from society in general. And to paraphrase Jesus, resistance is to be expected. Now, if I was being a blatant asshole, that would be one thing. But I don't think that's the case here—that is, at least I've tried as always to be equitable and even-handed.
Comparing my views about sexuality with people who are "slightly racist" is insulting to me, but I can see how it might not be any different from your perspective.
- *has taken ongramme
- I didn't mean to insult - but I'm glad you can see how I could make the comparison.lukus_W
- I don't think you're a blatant asshole by any stretch .. but I do worry that measured arguments can be used by those who are 'blatant assholes' as validation for their own intolerant views.lukus_W
- those who are 'blatant assholes' as validation for their own intolerant views.lukus_W
- Ideas are contagious - it's all our duties to make sure our own ideas are worth catching ..lukus_W
- the bible literally tells us to murder and hurt people who go against the word of godscarabin
- No it doesn't, scarabin. You're confusing it with the Q'uran.gramme

it is deffo not a choice! you don't have any choice at all. if i wanted to live true to myself then its something i had to deal with and except at a very young age. when i was a kid, i remember my dad telling me i had to "stay away" from homosexuals as they are bad people. this was my 1st taste of homophobia and i guess the most effective. he was a GI in the 2nd world war and maybe he had a bad experience, or had actually partook in a little "cock fun" lol and felt guilt. more probably tho, he grew up in the mountains of kentucky and was probably told at a very young age that homosexuals are wrong and to stay away himself. maybe he thought he was protecting me. who knows. religion, i'm sure, played a big part in his beliefs.
- PS i cant be the only gay on this site ?? anyone ??

why is homosexuality such a big thing? ...maybe because some straight guys or gals are turned on by homosexual fantasies and fall in guilt over that?
- locustsloth0
frankly, mono, i think your lack of tolerance for people of faith is just as disturbing and troubling as the reason for the most reason thread bump; legislators making steps to limit the rights of people based on their sexuality (more on this later).
Seriously mono, while gramme and i don't even see CLOSE to eye to ey regarding religion, his explanations of his viewpoint are always rooted in how he feels about his own beliefs. They are measured and polite. Your viewpoint can be summarized by you pointing at someone (anyone) whom you disagree with and saying "You're stupid!!!" (and then asking for their portfolio).
It's this same sort of intolerance that you, dobs and the rest of us are upset about, isn't it? gramme hasn't said anything against homosexuals aside from "under my belief structure, these people are misguided. This doesn't mean they're bad people". It's his opinion and he's free to have it and express it. Same way that we can express that we think these hypocritical legislators are assholes.
If you want people to be more tolerant, lead by example. If you would like people to be respectful of the viewpoints of yourself and others, do the same for them.- that sums of Newstoday/QBN in a nutshell.JazX
- Also, I don't call people stupid if they voice their opinion. Don't generalize like that; it's not fair.monospaced
