blaw, do you really think I am lacking in compassion? Have I not said this is an awful situation and that I am truly saddened by this woman's plight?
Could it be that we have diametrically opposed ideas of what love in action really looks like? Could it be that I think the loving thing to do is to never give up on a person, to prevent them committing suicide at all costs? Giving up on said person and saying it's their life, their choice, their moral prerogative to end their life is not loving. It is lazy and selfish. It is the insincere friend who does not fight with all their might to save the lives of friends and loved ones. A true friend does not give up.
Miracles do not happen often, but nevertheless they do happen. I have witnessed them first hand, such as in the example of my own mother. One day she is undergoing chemo and looks 20 years older, the next week she is moving around, exercising, being her old busy self – for no apparent reason.
Even if the miracles do not happen, as is most often the case, I simply believe that it is NOT our right to take the life of another, except only in the case of justified way (read: WW2, NOT the recent travesty in Iraq). People who have lost the will to live should not be given the choice to act out of desperation. That is not love. That is neglect.
- err, in the case of justified war, I meant.gramme
- or the death penalty which you somehow can square in your head.mrdobolina
- I think assuming your ideals are 100% accurate and the one suffering needs to suck it up lacks compassion, yes.blaw

You see it as giving up on them, we don't. Telling them their pain is endurable marginalizes them.

The point of this post was that a fellow human being was denied the help she asked for and had to die alone. You used it as an excuse to push you rhetoric, that is sad.
- gramme0
I did not use is an excuse to push my rhetoric. I simply saw you all saying that she should have been given the right to be euthanized, and I disagree.
You guys brought religion into the argument this time – not me.

Poor woman, I'm glad she was finally able to make her own choice about her end, to go out on her own terms as close as she could, to take a decisive action to improve her situation at the end of a long horrible ordeal she had no way to help herself out of and no control over.
I hope that if in the future I am in a similar situation I am allowed the dignity and respect to make the same choice for myself - I hope the attitudes of our society have matured enough by then, though I don't hold out too much hope for that level of general enlightenment
rest in peace
- that was the attitude i was looking for in this threadCALLES
- I know bro, shame it went a bit southkelpie
- You know it's going to go that way when you post something like this at QBN.Jaline
- i'm actually ashamed of myself for posting the PIITB shit... i was just trying to derail the argument... poorly7point34

its cool point... we all knew that. made me laugh. Personally i could not bare life without humor

i dont mind a discussion even a heated one now and then. its great to have conviction and passion, but the arguments on here become so personal and vindictive, especially ones dealing with religious or mral themes. its important and valuable that we dont all have the same opinion but it gets so fucking dull to hear either side tell the other how wrong they are.
and this is no proper memorial for this woman obviously, but i think she deserved a little more dignity.
- just so were clear im telling everyone else how wrong they are :)7point34

I can't even begin to imagine the intolerable suffering this woman must have been going through, nor can I understand the total lack of dignity that she received and continues to receive in her absence.
- hey you cant just show up late and pretend to be upset... back to your coldplay with you7point34

7.34:
I agree that these arguments get dull. I know that I myself am at times guilty of pushing a point even after I've presented it in the clearest language I can muster. When I continue to argue in such a way, it becomes less about championing truth, and more about my own sad narcissism. It becomes about proving to some of you that I am not in fact a naive fool as I have been labelled in the past by some. For that I apologize as it seems I have offended some of you. That was not my intention by any means.
I am happy to be a fool for my beliefs. I have every reason to expect such labels from those whose lives are predicated upon vastly different priorities. Cheers everyone.

It is a horrible horrible situation and I can't imagine her pain and despair. I'm glad she's not suffering any longer.

gramme,
i think you're probably a good guy, but religion, is such a personal choice - and such a personal experience. i honestly cant say i wish any ill against anyone for believing what they genuinely believe. more power to you, whatever floats your jesus boat, etc.i'm not terribly offended by anyone. i just find it kinda ridiculous to mount attacks on each others personal beliefs by calling each other ignorant, or immoral, or what have you. and for what? to argue with someone online in a way which makes it very hard to decipher tone and very easy to misconstrue or even misinterpret. no one is ever going to agree with anyone else 100%. whats the point? does it make your values any less to hear someone disagree or question them? no. does it make someone any less moral or ethical if the are a geneuine humantiarian yet dont believe in god? no.
i wasn't really aiming my statement at anyone in particular. i'm just saying when you get heated with one another it makes it very easy and almost necessary to shut it out rather than listen to what the other person is saying.
obviously the subject matter lends itself to a moral or ethical debate... just was saying, when i realized what the thread was originally about it seemed a bit in poor taste. (i'm guilty too, i was making PIITB jokes) no ones perfect
- Sorry, but the idea of apologizing for making PIITB jokes makes me laugh.harlequino
- haha didnt apologize, just said i felt bad when i remembered what the topic of this thread was7point34

How many of you ever contemplated suicide during a rough time in your life? What if during that period of time you decided to just do it, painlessly... thinking back now i'm pretty sure in most circumstances you would not do it because it would of been a rash decision and that tough time in your life was just that, a tough time.
Either you being 12 or 80... I don't think euthanasia should be legal. Just my 2 cents :)
