One could say that suffering and disease is a part of life - a big one even - and I suspect that if it wasn't for this hypocritical society that wants everything cleansed and perfected we wouldn't even be having this conversation with at least these arguments such as "dignity", "suffering", "hopeless", etc. Dignity?! Where's the indignity of being-ill?
I say this matter should be kept in strict medical/law terms, because apart from those you won't find any good solid reason or argument. Especially not in "values", either you be a libertarian veggie or a latter-day nut-job.

How about someone hits you with a car, but the doctors and nurses tell you to just soldier through the agony because maybe it'll go away in a few years?
You don't get to decide if someone should be able to cope with pain (physical or emotional) because you aren't the one experiencing it, that's just how it is.

In this argument, religion only has relevance to the religious.

I totally despair.
One poor woman's story dragged into a shite-slinging match between two parties that will never agree in less than 20 responses.
Utterly predictable, indeed the incitor said as much in a note. Now instead of respectful, thoughtful commentary on what must be horrific to live through this topic has degenerated into an age old argument with the usual bullies lining up on both sides.
Shame on you.

Suicide... personal choice. I think life should be viewed as an unlicensed, untaxed posession. You can do what you want with it, but if someone steals it from you, then that's breaking the law.
If you are religious, and don't believe in suicide... good for you, but the law would still state the same thing.
This would of course nullify the death penalty (unless the court rules your life is turned over to the state first).

It's a personal choice no doubt - but do you have the right to ask someone to kill you if you can't do it yourself? In legal matters, this is an important issue as well.

all i have to say is
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Desmond has his barrow in the market place...
Molly is the singer in a band...
Desmond says to Molly "Girl, I like your face"
And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand...
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!...
Lala how the life goes on...
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!...
Lala how the life goes on.Desmond takes a trolley to the jewelry store...
Buys a twenty carat golden ring... (Golden ring)
Takes it back to Molly waiting at the door...
And as he gives it to her she begins to sing... (Sing)
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!...
Lala how the life goes on...
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!...
Lala how the life goes on.In a couple of years they have built a home sweet home,
With a couple of kids running in the yard,
Of Desmond and Molly Jones... (Ha ha ha ha ha)Happy ever after in the market place...
Desmond lets the children lend a hand...
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face...
And in the evening she still sings it with the band...
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!...
Lala how the life goes on...
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!...

gramme, while I fully agree with you on this issue, the difficulty is as detritus so crassly demonstrated: undergirding worldview differences. If one believes that humans are the product of blind chance mutations, then there really are no moral implications to the taking of human life (in any context). We are just matter in motion and will be forgotten by a cold indifferent universe after we're gone. If, however, we are the products of a purposive designer who created us with dignity and with a soul, then it's a whole different issue. We are to respect life and seek to protect it under any circumstances.
- oh dear god not again....7point34
- *cough *cough *agreed *cough *coughPonyBoy
- I agree w/teleos... not the 'oh dear god' comment. :)PonyBoy
- so life is ethically irrelevant if you're not a believer?!! what sort of an argument is that?********
- A logical one. If there is not an absolute moral standard (the one we all sense internally), then it's all illusoryteleos
- what is illusory? why are you mixing religious morals with ontology? there's also ethical principles, not necessarily just moral. You said it yourself.********
- moral values from a religious stand-point.********

People like gramme disgust me. Pissing all over the well-being of someone else because they feel it's their personal duty to be God's warriors, battling to uphold their personal interpretation of life. Trivializing someone else's pain and insultingly calling them a coward.
Two words, gramme.

- Seriously, why is that the self-proclaimed holy are often so lacking in sensitivity and compassion?blaw

"If one believes that humans are the product of blind chance mutations, then there really are no moral implications to the taking of human life (in any context)."
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
Gee, I guess my athiesm/agnosticism makes my feelings of compassion, empathy and morals a grand fucking illusion then?
Thank you for denying me my humanity and ethics so concisely, you rock jackhole.
- So all the antiwar marches and charity and good things I've done is why, why, why?TheBlueOne
- that's the problem right there.********

- Some people do not use their concepts to their full extent - and that's why it's dangerous to discuss these matters lightly.********
- Its great that you do charity work. And you should. But tell me why it is "right" or "good"? Explain the moral imperative here.teleos
- Your moral superiority goes against everything Jesus said, teleos.mrdobolina
- your record is skipping again. Don't dodge the logic. Confront it... if you can.teleos
- thanks for proving my point.mrdobolina

Nice outburst, TheBlueONe. I expected much more from you. Wait no I didn't.
And yes, if there is no absolute standard of morality (the one you are internally programmed to sense), then your pragmatic observance of moral law is nothing more than a cultural and illusory exercise. Research: moral "oughtness".
- Did Jesus teach you to feel superior to other people?mrdobolina
- ouchCALLES
- i_monk0
You think there are absolute standards of morality?
- teleos0
You don't, i monk? Tell you what, let mrdobolina eat a live baby in front of you after he tells you it's ok with his personal/relative moral code and then lets see if you suddenly believe there are universal moral absolutes.
- because somehow I am cool with eating babies, because I am not christian.mrdobolina
- of course.

You know, teleos. I've never tangled with you before, mainly because I prefer not to trade barbs with folks online.
Overall, I'd say you raise some decent discussion points, and clearly have a grasp on a certain level of intellectualism. And I'm sure you're right jolly chap in person.
But goddamn it, you are truly arrogant. You deliver your points with a swagger and air of moral superiority that really drains it of any real insight and pisses me off.
Just needed to get that off my chest.
As you were.
- teleos0
I appreciate that, harlequino. It is hard to communicate tone on forums. I do tend to write in a somewhat terse, blunt manner.
- which is a flaw. I have problems. You should have known me B.C.. yeeesh.teleos
- but when I say it, you do not admit this flaw. You are an asshole.mrdobolina
