gt, i never said or implied that having a better looking computer makes you a better designer. My point is that a designer is less likely to be caught up in the hype of Apple simply because they already recognize the aesthetic beauty of Apple, and the design of a computer is already factor they consider when they go out to buy a computer. I'm not using Apple because I want to be a part of some cult, I'm using it because I respect their attention to detail.
Can you understand this?... Because I'm a designer and inherently care about the way things look, I'd rather have a good looking computer sitting on my desk with a beautiful interface versus an ugly one. it's really that simple. i don't know how your mind twisted that around to something else.
Do you apply your sense of design only to your work? what about your surroundings?

Do mercedes and bmw drivers go through this same shit at dinner parties? Or do they just congratualte each other on being able to afford a top end car?
Do nokia users berate motorolla users and vice versa?
And why are sony vaio laptops so expensive compared to dells?
And as long as no small children die, does anyone really care?

why would i care about opinions?
i choose mac as i like working with it. my brother in law rather uses a pc. to each their own.
these threads are a waste of time.

doesn't our entire livelihood depend upon people being willing to invest money in better design?

from 1992 to 2000, i was a windows user. when i started doing more graphic work for agencies and corporations, i'd get files with mac fonts which i couldn't use. the conversion was pain in ass. so i got a mac. once i switched, i pretty much stop turning on my pc except when i did 3d. did mac make my life easy? yes. it simplified a lot of things and also reduce the amount of time i spend on maintenance. also once i got used to osx UI, it was just a lot easier.
i haven't worked for any reputable agencies or corporation where they gave me a pc to design.
if a company gives me a pc, i'd have to think twice about it and would assume that this company is probably not so serious about design.

What about all of the other corporations, though? Many of them do the same thing.
