Anyone here ride?
I haven't been mtbing in years and finally I am going to purchase a nice hard-tail xc this week. Going to use it for mostly single-track type of stuff, and some street riding to and from work.
Currently looking at a Kona Kula:

Anyone have any suggestions for alternatives in the same price range?

what's that in USDs. Lots of good bikes out there

nevermind, $1100 looks pretty sweet

I just got a full suspension for the first time last year, love it. Rear shock locks out for the road, etc.

About 1200 USD.
Looking to get a decent fork, decent components, and hydro discs.
I looked at a Giant Rainer, and it had SRAM 7.0 derailleur, and I think the shimano deore xt is nicer on the Kona. Plus the Giant didn't have a very good crank.

I like the kona stuff but then its a dirt jumper and not a downhill, guess it depends what you are using it for. I have a kona scab with some marzocchi forks which I wouldn't mind replacing but thats been a really good all rounder even though its a jump bike.
specialized rock hoppper pro is probably worth a look at.

xt all the way

The rear shock that locks out for road is nice.
I think a buddy of mine who sells his own single speed training bikes used to have a high Specialized that did that which was nice.
I thought about a full suspenson bike but its getting a little out of my price range and I can't seee myself doing any big drops. Plus the added weight that it seems most full suspension models add is not a plus for me.

damn, mt bikes are getting soooo expensive!
i have cannondale F700 Volvo team edition from 1997. i don't ride as much and i probably need to get a new set of brakes and tires.
i should take it out more this year.

They have a few of those jumper's at the store near me, nice bikes but not the style of bike I am looking into.
I think the rockhopper if I remember, at least at the shop I checked out, was a little out of my price range.

mine a full sus. XC bike(not for big drops nor does it have lots of travel) Just good for long decents on rougher trails. Really nice on the bad back, handles great in rocky terrain, etc. couple of pounds heavier.
damn mothers day or i'd be out there today

yeah hard tails are great for XC

Most bikes in that price range should have comparable component specs. I'd suggest trying as many as you can and choosing the one that fits best, as there's a big variance from company to company.
that kona looks like a good deal.

(May 14 06, 13:13)I've got a price list from last year some time and it's listed as $3500US, but it could have changed since then. :\ I actually work for Cannondale (in a way) which opens the door for all kinds of nice deals, like 20% off wholesale with Giant. :)

If you are going to be doing much XC I would look at something lighter than a Kona. Especially if you are lookign at hardtails. Maybe look at the new stable of Specialized bikes. I mainly ride 4X and DH but for training I have a Brodie Awl which is a dual suspension XC bike and I appreciate the suspension on the technical stuff.
And go Sram X.0. Its way lighter and super durable. I run it on my DH rig and its never needed so much as a tune up. I qualify that by saying i ride 6 days a week rain or shine or night and day.

DSmith- what's your DH rig? i raced/rode DH for years and years nationally and internationally and love to hear about others on NT.
Sram stuff kills it. as a matter of pref- i love the throttle style over any thumb shiftah's 7 days a week. also a lot nicer when you dump it and no parts hanging out to get caught-up.

Tom...price around for your bike but check out adrenaline bikes before you buy. Greg ships stuff all over the world (he sells tons of bikes) and the prices are great. I saved a bunch of $$ on my new baby.

Definitely, I just don't know if I can afford some of the higher end components like the SRAM.
I will check out some lighter bikes, I am just worried about cost, I would consider myself entyr level since I haven't rode for years.
I will definitely shop arround but I am going away camping for 4 days next weekend so I will probably get it locally instead of online.
I am going to bounce between some different bike shops and see if I can get them to beat eachothers prices and drive the price down.
