not sure whether you're more of freerider or cross-country mtb'er, but I love my Schwinn Homegrown for cross-country riding and racing. They aren't in production anymore, but you can still get great deals on Ebay. Bought it last summer for 700 usd - 21 lbs. everthing included. I would definitely check out the used mtn. bikes on Ebay.

If you are looking to spend a grand on a bike, I stand behind Specialized... maybe one day I'll be proven wrong, but I have a Hard Rock. And for 350-400, it has been a damn good bike. It could easily take seven stairs in a single jump and was great for off roading with the Grip Shift technology....

go for full suspension.. you don't have to be hucking big drops to appreciate a little give in the rear. so much fun at high speeds, you won't regret it.

Yeah Sram stuff kills. You can get in cheaper with x9 and I highly reccomend it.

I ride Shore most every day so I don't race much anymore but with Whistler close I do some of the local races and I'll probably try to do more 4x this year.I have an 06 Intrense Uzzi VPX which is my big sled and I have a Brodie Nemesis rig for riding Shore and 4x.

I have a Gray 2005 Cannondale F400. Ran me close to $900 with a 5 year tune up package included. Nice hardtail that's light on its feet and can take the bumps.
It has a lockout on the headshock for street riding and is fitting for non-technical trails and cross country.
Make sure the headshock is good if you consider getting one. They did have a recall on my shock which caused me to do some back and forth.

holy shit what language are you guys speaking?!?! =P

I wish full suspension but I just can't justify the cost, Id rather get a decent xc hard-tail then a low end full suspension bike. If I find I really want full suspension maybe at the end of the season or so I will sell and upgrade in the spring or in the off-season.
I hope those clip-in shoes are too expensive.

i would go for
norco 125

has anyone asked how you will be using the bike?
people are suggested dirt jump frames and you're talking clip-ins... i'm confused.

Clips are fun, especially when you see some dude lurch over sideways because he's stuck. I agree, though, rather useless for dirt jumping or DH.

Cross country riding, single track stuff, nothing too rough ( I don't live in BC haha). I will also be riding it in the city to the studio I work at during the summer, so I want something fairly light weight that can serve both purposes. I think a hard-tail fits the bill, I am just not sure if there are some other comparable hard tails in the same range I should be looking at.
The main bike I am looking into now is the Kona Kula, specs seem nice and fits my budget nicely. Not looking to do any DH or Dirt Jumping, or jumping off 5 foot drops.

right on.. Kona is a 1st class company, Canadian, good people.
i rode a Stinky hard for about 4 years. many fond memories.

i've been riding a Specialized Hard Rock ($700) for almost a year now, mostly XC. doing 100 km (70 miles?) a week with it, never had any complaints. so don't worry about the deore shifters or shimano v-brakes, those are decent parts that with the right care (cleaning, adjusting regularly) can keep up with XT for a long time.
