must be a regional thing.

point out that tipping didn't begin in the US until after the civil war and that it was deemed unamerican as it belittles the person being tipped

Tipping in the US is bollox, complete and utter bollox.
Its all so false...Work the tips into the salaries and add it to the bills and tell staff to be happy goddammit.
There's no tipping here in Japan and nearly every person in nearly every service industry is happy with what they are doing and proud of their job and uniform. What's more, if I do ever give a tip, (taxi, for example) they are so happy because it is not expected, and I do it because they did a good job, not because they were trying to get a tip by being false and happy...

but the japanese are concientious and industrious. americans have gotten spoiled while being at the mercy of businesses=tipping to make up for salary

Jesus H. Christ!
Just read the whole thread.Let me tell you all something. If you have never worked in a service industry job that got tips - bartender, waiter - you cannot AT ALL relate to this conversation.
Some of you keep tossing around "minimum wage." Know what that is for bartenders or waiters?
Surprise! It's not $5, or $4, or $3. Last I remember, it's $2.13 an hour - the same rate I made in 1999-2000 waiting tables in college.
So, if you want, you try and tell me that that is equal to other jobs making min. wage, earning $5 plus or whatever it is these days.--
Bottom line, F service and F all the crap. Tip $1 a drink and nothing more, and if you want good service all night, leave $2 after the first drink and you'll be taken care of.
A little sympathy for the the people who are busting their ass at a busy bar all night must might bring some good karma your way, instead of standing around debating the merits of someone opening a bottle for you.
I know it sucks, I myself question the "labor" put into such a task...
But bartenders have to put up with so much dumb shit sometimes, not the least of which is wondering if they'll go home with any decent $$ on a given night. The least I can do is increase the odds that whatever they make that night helps their life continue appropriatly. If you make $15 an hour or more in wages or salary, don't bitch about a dollar tip. Please.

I was thinking that you should tip him, but since he kicked you out you were right for not tipping him. You should burn the place down.

is tipping for good service? i don't think it's about the financial status of the proprietor.

bottom line is if you didn't like it you should have done something about it, but instead you come complain on a message board, you little bitch.

Bing a brit - I don't just tip because that's the norm. If I get great service and feel like attention was paid and they didn;t fuck the order up - then I'll lay down 15 - 20%.
If it wasn't - you're lucky if you get 10%.
I ALWAYS tip bartenders because if you don't - you don;t get served! Simple as that
