and you do?... i don't want to get into a pissing match with you but what exactly do you contribute around here oh wise one?

advertising design, 'nuf said.

Bonseff, no, I just think it fails to communicate a positive, progressive message for the brand. It's just like 1000 other ads. It's limp and boring.
2cents, I'd like think I actually present a different opinion or idea instead of just insulting people. That's all I'm asking for here.

it's an ad. it's very simple. and it is design. the photo. the type. the composition of the two working together.
it's design!
- BonSeff0
so basically you are so wrapped up in the brand that ad let you down? but it doesnt make it less graphic design because it didnt strike a fuzzy chord with you
i cant comment on this nomo
cheers

(Jul 20 05, 18:26)"thats not insulting, but had i posted that way you still would have had something to say about me "insulting" you... its not what i say in your opinion... its me.

Phrases that start like "design is..." or "design isn't..." only manage to limit design. Design "can be" many things.
You might not like the Bally ads but that doesn't give you the right to publically disrespect it in this way. It's a matter of taste.
I like them. I think they work. It's not the Parthenon, it's a poster. I think you expect too much out of this ad without having done any research about it.
- MrDinky0
at least we are talking about design..
remember, the graphic designer who gets the photos does not usually have a say in how and what the picture is gonna be.
it is the job of GD to crop, place the image than apply logo or other treatment to give balance in both graphical element and photo.
some people may have a hand in how the photo is taken but that is why there is Graphic AD, Photo AD, Interior AD.. etc etc..

p0nkz reprazent!
- MrDinky0
misconception maybe that when graphic deisnger do illustrations
a GD can produce complete new art work in to poster but they still need to lay them out correctly
- BonSeff0
i think i sorta get fate's idea.
its like taking a pic of a turd and typesetting the word 'crap' next to it. that doesnt make it an ad.
but if you place that ad in
shit sammich magazine it is an ad. and well intended
that is where i take issue i guess

'Graphic Design' is not the be-all-end-all. Just because its not 'Graphic Design' doesn't mean its not Design.
Why get caught up in labels? "Oh, its not graphic design, its [art direction, ad design, production etc".
Such a narrow view of Design.
Those Bally examples are absolutely products of a design process imho.
Thoughtful deliberation and decision making is evident; a definite orchestration of numerous specialists coming together to fulfill one vision. They communicate a message. They have polish and sense of purpose.
Design isn't just about type and being 'clever'.
- BonSeff0
that was a horrible metaphore.
i should just say you cant simply separate graphic design from visual communication.
*puts the beer down

but, whoever did it, had to think about the type. typography is a large part of design. wether it came in 1 minute or 45, it still is design.
