I had to present, photo concets for a fashion brand, by sketch and by inhouse setups... (it was for the the guy who designed xoxo)...
I designed & directed the shots, the photographer took them...
That's design still'

not design?... you truly are clueless.

it all depends on the goal fate,
if it sells a skirt, its a good ad
ad being type + image
same as it ever was

I hope you guys don't think I'm tryin to be combative. Just being pedantic while asking for other opinions.
Rise, ConceptHue argued that what you did would fall under "Production" rather than "Design". I guess then you're getting into some dubious distinctions about what it really -takes- to communicate.
So on a more specific note, it's not graphic design.
- fate_redux0
2cents, have you ever contributed shit around here? Cause all you are is a nut biting bitch.
- fate_redux0
Bonseff, yeah, that's where I'm arriving. Different means to the same end.

that ad is graphic design, why?
we're discussing it right now, and how if he communicated what needed to be communicated in the ad or not, and imo he did, he communicated the brand...
- BonSeff0
maybe you should clue us in on what you think graphic design is
- rise0
this thread is like, whats the difference between graphic design and graphic art.

It is far more expensive to sit over the shoulder of a photographer and complain and move and adjust rather than saying, "you're the photographer, shoot a hundred shots, we'll pay you X amount."
ConceptHue
(Jul 20 05, 18:23Todays digital workflow allows for instant feed back from clients(in attendence or conferencing). My guess is this photoshoot would be attended by many important clients and the CD and AD. And they would select a shot, or five shots, that day.

rise, well the point was that the Photo really does the communicating, not any sort of graphic design. The logo is merely there as a neccesity, the very basic need for the ad.
If the photo does the communicating and not anything you really "created" graphically, I don't think it would qualify as graphic design. Production, art direction, sure.

Graphic design is the applied art of arranging image and text to communicate a message. It may be applied in any media, such as print, digital media, motion pictures, animation, product decoration, packaging, and signs.

viscom=graphic design.
theres other factors,
maybe they wanted arrows, the designer had to argue why there would be no use of arrows in the ad...
with out the designer speaking out, we don't/won't know.

concept is king

I remember this from a while back, and I found out who did it; WK
if you read the brief, they aren't talking about design, they are talking about advertising....
p.s. wk isn't about to not be invovled in photoshoots.

"I hope you guys don't think I'm tryin to be combative. Just being pedantic while asking for other opinions."
after you said...
"I think with something so obviously banal ("Ok, look brooding and elitist! Like all those other ads!") whatever "designer" slapped that logo on there shouldn't be taking credit for it. Because a monkey could do it."
and...
"Oh, I'm sure the bullshit they fed the client to convince them this was "unique" and "growing the brand" took ages to prepare. Good bullshit for bad execution, especially something as boring as this, can take a long time to script. I bet it was pages of malarky."
so you're not trying to be combative... or i think a better word would be... belligerent?
i just tell it like i see it dude... sorry if it hits a sore spot with you, but you really have no idea what you're talking about here... once you put some time in doing real design work for a real agency/studio you'll understand what goes into something like this.
the ad is selling the clothes and the clothing designer... thats fashion design.
- fate_redux0
right rise, but it's not isolate to them. I've seen plenty of "designers" claim slapping logos on photos in their portfolios.
I just don't think it should be called design. If you want to look at the whole shabang, from concept, to shooting, to logo-slapping-on, to the pitch, then I can consider other definitions like "Art Direction" or "Production"
But calling that ad (graphic) design is like calling yourself an Novelist for being able to use a keyboard.
- fate_redux0
2cents, I wasn't addressing anyone with the initial comments like "banal" dude. I wasn't getting nasty with anyone, and I've been respectful of everyone's opinions.
Except yours, because you just come dick-swinging into my threads in order to be a cock.

And fashion design? No. Even textbook, you're way off the mark. That's not fashion design, that's selling fashion design.
