brilliant article, thanks MX_OnD.
Regarding that phrase we keep hearing, "Transfer of Power" (or the more ambiguous "Transition of Power" - "transition" doesn't mean power goes from the currently powerful to the Iraqis, it just implies movement, without specifying direction):
"They have no control over their oil, no authority over the streets of Baghdad, let alone the rest of the country, no workable army or loyal police force. Their only power is that of the American military and its 150,000 soldiers whom we could see at the main Baghdad intersections yesterday."

Not that can i would entertain virtu's provocative and gloating thread, that is worded in such a way that he's trying to act like the botched invasion/occupation is actually everything going to plan...
but...
can i just inform people, that this isn't Iraq having a democracy for the first time in it's history. Iraq had a brief period of Republican democracy in the 50s, but ofcourse oil politics, cold war machinations, a history of US/British/Soviet interferrence, and the creation of and need to protect the state of Israel all put an end to that. Luckily the US's best friends the Baath party were able to stage a revolution duirng the 60s and put an end to that democracy, and the even closer friend of the US, Saddam Hussein, was able to stage his coup in the 1970s.
But we're not supposed to talk about the cold war anymore.

once again, ladies and gentlemen, do not believe the hype... this was a forced grafting of bad skin placed over an exploding skeleton on a well-lit stage in the theater of little minds and shorter visions...
- dr_strangedub0
whatever you do...don't stop talking about this...
why is this bad for the environment?
- dr_strangedub0
ok...how will Iraq's economy grow given the pretext that they will establish a 'democratic system'?

I'm reading alot of pessimism...
... very little optimism - lot's of hatred towards world leaders - lots of negative points about the death and destruction... and nothing (except a very select few comments) showing anything positive.
so - what's your solution to Iraq and to terrorism?
I'm not being a smart-ass. ;) Instead of all this negativity - what's the solution? What do you want to see done?
Please - I'm not looking for Idealistic situations here either... no daiseys and roses - just solutions.
- mrdobolina0
Solution:
Build a time machine and don't make the same mistake twice.
Vespa:
Gingko Biloba
- abizzyman0
how 'bout a real solution? Many don't like the way things are now... so what's your solution to the given issue?
- mrdobolina0
the only solution at this point was elections, good for the iraqis that voted. But listening to people cry out freedom is making me sick.
- gfySelf0
so when the Shiites and the Kurds break out in civil war, what do we do then?
is the coalition going to back a side?
i think its gonna get real messy and nobody is gonna be happy.
- vespa0
it's an impossible question to answer abizzyman, especially if you have been protesting against the case for going for war right from the start.
everything that people feared would happen has happened, and now we are expected to come up with a solution to this quagmire of violence and chaos given that we have little to no access to facts about what is really going on in Iraq?
What i would like to see is the US and UK giving a clear outline of their exit strategy.
