Android outsells iPhone OS for first time

http://www.guardian.co.uk/techno…

"Mobile phones using Google's Android operating system have outsold Apple's iPhone in the US for the first time, according to new research, as the battle between two of the biggest American technology firms to dominate the mobile web steps up a gear.

The iPhone revolutionised the mobile phone industry when it appeared three years ago, but fearful of being squeezed out of the mobile internet market, Google quickly hit back with its own software platform called Android.

Despite a shaky start when the first device, the G1, went on sale more than a year after the iPhone launched, Google's platform has gone from strength to strength with a slew of new handsets, some of which have been received favourably compared with the latest version of Apple's flagship device.

Mobile phones using Android now make up the second most popular category of smartphone in the US, according to market research by the NPD Group. The market for phones that can send emails, access the web and download applications is still dominated by the BlackBerry, made by Canada's Research In Motion and a brand which last year celebrated its 10th birthday, but Android is closing the gap. BlackBerry devices accounted for 36% of the smartphone market in the first quarter of the year, according to NPD, while Android devices had a 28% share and the iPhone 21%. [...]"

Live without your smartphone?

Questions for people who use a smart phone (Android / iPhone)

Which applications do you use on a regular basis, which you'd no longer want to live without?

Are there many? Or do you basically just use it to browse the web and text / make calls?

New Ways of Selling Design

From reading a lot of recent blog-posts it sounds like many of the large firms providing media-content via traditional means, are shitting themselves.

If the large firms are correct - and their days really are numbered - maybe in the future everyone will work independently of large organisations.

Currently in 2009, it seems that designers need to promote themselves to gain kudos in the industry. In a way, modern designers have become individual enterprises themselves - with their own individual brand, streams to interact with public (via a blog / twitter / vimeo etc).

Baring this in mind, I can imagine a time when all designers operate as 'hired-guns' and are hired according to a jobs requirements.

If this kind of situation was to develop, informal work networks would be created on a per-project basis. You'd need to work with a team of people who you'd not necessarily ever meet in person and you'd all need to get up to speed quickly.

If this became true, there'd be a need for a new breed of webapps that can provide a decent way for people to collaborate on projects. (There's basecamp - but I don't think that's ideal).

I don't like the idea of crowdsourcing because it builds upon exploitation - but I think that crowdsourcing sites like 99designs and crowdSpring are a stepping stone .. they won't last or replace the way that the majority of design jobs are carried out.

However, despite their faults, these crowdsourcing sites do at least attempt to tackle the problem of finding new ways to sell design services and interact with clients (without the involvement of large firms).

Maybe what we need are alternative models to crowdsourcing which tackle the same problem in a better way - but what could they be?

Decent road bike for under £500

I don't know much about bikes.. and could do with some advice from anyone who does. Basically I just want a decent commuting / run-around bike that will last a fair amount of time. Might use it for longer rides occasionally.

Anyone know a place where you can get decent quality samples (drum beats etc.)?

What's the best way of building up a library?

Do you need to keep track of licences for this kind of thing?

Creatine Monohydrate

I've heard it's bad, but after doing some research on the web - I can't really find out why.

I've read reports which indicate benefits to endurance, muscle mass - even brain functioning.

It seems the biggest problem might be related to kidney / liver function - but that this could be alleviated through proper hydration.

Is it bad?
