I don't know much about bikes.. and could do with some advice from anyone who does. Basically I just want a decent commuting / run-around bike that will last a fair amount of time. Might use it for longer rides occasionally.

Get a fixed, you could get quite a good one for that price, a Fuji Track, or even a Bianchi Pista... Perfect for the commute and occasional longer rides and will last forever (less breakable/wearable parts).
Get a front brake though, and steer clear of little children! :)
- Why front brake instead of rear? Seems dangerous is someone is a novice fixie.********

- thx for tips********
- Front brake is the one that stops you, you can skid the rear wheel easily without a brake on a fixie anyway.DesignedbyDave

I don't understand the draw to fixed-gear bikes- what happens when you have a hill? I like to be able to change gears, personally. any bike will do, just make sure it has some decent tires. I paid $50 for my shogun.
- yeah, how do you get up a hill on a fixed gear bike? walk?********
- get fit or get off. If you run a decent gear youll be fineDesignedbyDave
- Fixes are faddish... but actually cool in a flat area without too many potholes.... newbies = gearsvaxorcist
- i've found up hills somehow easier on a fixed gear. going down the hill is the bitch.jazmine

Don't get a single speed bike, especially if you plan to do longer rides.

fixed gear bikes look amazing but there's no way i'd be riding one around highgate -- london's pretty flat tho generally so you might be alright

Go to Halfords and buy a non-fashionable bike with gears, brakes... stuff like that.
They have a website too...

I have a Carrera. Nobody tells me I'm awesome, but I cycle it up and down, round and round, in towns, in the countryside, on long and short journeys, sometimes I do skids or I bunny hop a curb. I lock it up outside a shop, go in, come back out and its still there. Sure, nobody admired it, I never get a crowd of hipsters taking mobile phone shots, but that's okay, because I go home and I read my bible and I praise the lord for making me a wonderful human being.

Ok...
If you want something simple, lightweight that rarely breaks and gets you everywhere, by a single-speed (with possibility of fixing later, if you want to try it).
If you want something for longer rides, more options and quicker, then get a standard road bike with relaxed geometry.
No matter what you do, do not buy a bike that looks like a white leather belt please.

I'd steer clear of a mountain bike for road use, but really anything below £500 is kind of the same I would have thought. You only pay more cash for better components and lightness.
- i've heard the same.. i think i'll get super skinny tires whichever bike i buy********

70's or 80's Japanese road bike in good shape....why Japansese? Because parts are easy to find, some British and French and Italian bikes from that era look great and ride nicely, but parts can sometimes be hard to find....
Japanese road bikes can often be found for $200 or so after it's been looked at by a good bike mechanic...
New handlebars, check the bottom bracket and stem, be sure wheels and frame straight, try to find columbus tubing or Reynolds 531, but there are various Fuji and other japanese lightweight alloys that are nice too...
Old road bikes can easily be converted to fixies... check for horizontal dropouts where the rear wheel attaches....
