The bleedin' obvious

I've been reading some blogs and tweets recently and I am amazed, truely amazed at the fact that many people seem to write the most obvious things as if they are some huge revelation to the rest of us (their readers). Can I just say "You're not the first to have done this . . . I'm bored with your updates about how you managed to get extra work done by getting up 1/2 hour earlier than normal, or how you've installed some wanky to do list on your i-phone and if only you could print it, but anyway it's made your life so complete, and I really don't need to know that you've discovered the countryside really is beautiful, or that there loads to do in London. Please. Stop. Wait till you have something useful to tell me."
Sorry eveyone - I know to some extent this post is doing what I'm complaining about. But right now I just wanted to get this off my chest as there's been no one here for the last three days and you know what I've discovered, when it's quiet like this, I find I'm a whole lot more productive.

Places to go? Things to see? All I can see at the moment is web 2.0 designs which are nice but not exactly giving me the urge to open up PS and create something wonderful. Links anybody?

Flash version

Wondering which version of Flash most people are targeting these days? I have a client who is saying 6/7. Which version do most people build for? If less than v9 how do people stand with AS3 is that being "ignored" until more people build for v9 or has everyone just adopted v9 and AS3 without worrying about who has what version of flash installed.
Thanks.

Horizontal scrolling website

I'm building a site for a client who wishes to display a number of images horizontally on the page. What's the best approach CSS wise. Currently using absolute positioning of divs but I'm interested to know what other ways might be better to lay this out.
Can't seem to find much on Google on how to do this as I guess it's not that usable as a layout.
Suggestions, please?

Portable H/Drive

Just had a WD hard drive pack up on me. Need to replace it. Any recomendations. I need one that can be carried arround and be reasonably robust. What people use? I was suprised this failed on me - had treated it pretty well over the last 12 months. I lost about 10gb of data which was a killer. I was told all portable hard drives are delicate and should be treated very carefully. I had thought the idea of it being portable was that I could chuck it into my bag - not so it appears.

mac g4 OS upgrade

I've got an old mac powerbook G4 running OSX version 10.2. It's only got 500Mb ram and a speed of about 667hz - will it upgrade to the new OSX and is it worth doing so or should I just leave it to die?

Bartercard

Just lost a client as they're going to use a Batercard service to build their e-commerce system. I not sure whether to laugh or cry! Actually I quite like the client so am almost worried on their behalf in case they're letting the cowboys lose on their site. Has anyone any experience of Bartercard or even sell their services on it?

PDF on the fly

Any way to create a PDF from an HTML page without it becoming a massive enterprise scale solution? I've looked at itext, and some other java based solutions - seemed way too complex. I also looked at php which was close - but still not quite there. Ideally I'd like it to be done with a script(JS/pearl) which could be configured.
I know it's a long shot but anyone any ideas - I've done three days research on this and pretty much got nowhere.

Does anyone have the link to the site which displayed current search strings in "real time"?
Any links to search terms analysis sites would be helpful too.
Many thanks

equip the studio

care to give a list of studio essentials - I think they used to do this in creative review:

like

2 x MBP 15"
2 X 24" monitor
Pantone Book
Adobe CS3
Portable Hard Drive
Canon Digital Camera
Scanner
HP Printer

etc

I'm just preparing a shopping list!

the apprentice

Last night - why did SAS fire the one who had put the system in place and yet let the project manager off the hook when she was absolutely pants in every way?

If you didn't watch it, it's probably on watch again.

BBC NEWS PAGES

Just looking at the source code on this and noticed it's a table based layout. Odd that the beeb's site is often seen as best of breed and yet that "layout" is not built with CSS.
I guess it'll be updated some time. Any views from yourselves?

laptop suggestion

Had a Sony Vaio, switched to a MBP but have never been able to fully switch to Mac OSX - not sure why guess that's another thread. Anyway, am frustrated with WIN XP/BOOTCAMP on year old MBP. Lots of small irritating things, and also the build quality of the MBP isn't that good - chasis is bent, screen has marks etc. Anyway, any thoughts on a new PC laptop? Sony's resolution doesn't match the MAC, Dell's look horrid, am thinking about a LEVENO/THINKPAD - anyone use one of them?

colour shift

I do a screen shot in IE and take a colour sample of a background and create a nice graphic with background colour.
Place graphic over background and it looks great in IE - seemless.
In FF I can see the shape around the graphic - it looks as though the background colour is different. All are gifs. What's the deal? Anyone had similar problems?
