My site was/is doing fine with a page 2 google ranking for a chosen search term. Yesterday it goes to page one and today back to page 2. Any idea why that might be? Also, google page listings seem to be different on different browsers/OSs - anyone else seeing this? I know if I'm logged into igoogle I get a different listing but when I log out and test in FF/chrome/safari I sometimes get different positioning for my site on same day/same time.

When you're logged in, it keeps track of your "starred" sites so that might be why they appear at the top of the results.

Not just starred sites. It gives you a completely different result based on sites you've visited before. But if you are logged in to a Google account, you can select Disable Customizations which will give you the neutral results.

You can also search using a tool like this to check where you actually are.

I used to be the 2nd search result for "muller", now some German footballers have stolen my spot. Grrrr...!

Actually the best way to check is probably just through Google themselves - set up a Google Webmaster Tools account for your site and on the dashboard page where it says "search queries" click More.
Then it will show you the average position you ranked for different keywords as well as clickthrough rate, pretty good info to have. You can also filter by country to see the difference in different parts of the world.
