xBox or PS3

I know nothing about Games consoles. My son has DS and PSP, we have a Wii. Thoughts are on getting something with a better range of games than the Wii (COD for example). Would we be best with xBox or PS3? My nephew says xBox because it's cheaper and his mates all have them - but I don't have any mates so which should I go for?
Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but hasn't the xBox been around so long that there will be a yBox coming out anytime soon to compete with the PS3 thus making my xBox out of date?
    Thanks

both systems have virtually identical game libraries with a few system exclusives, so that's really not an issues.

I think an xbox360 is probably the wiser investment right now—especially for the online—unless you have a want and/or need for blu-ray on the ps3 which does come with a heftier pricetag.

    So practically speaking:
    xbox360 = online juggernaut
ps3 = multimedia outlet not totally devoid of online capabilities

Go into a shop and take a look at the games that are out for each platform. Go with the one which has the games which you would like to play.

In terms of graphics and cpu bullshit - they are pretty much on par with each other.

The PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray player so if you would like to be using Blu-Ray's factor this in too. The PS3 has free online gaming, but with the 360 you need to subscribe to XBox Live if you want to play games co-operatively or online.

The XBox360 has a huuuge game catalogue and can play XBox original games. The PS3 cannot play PS2 games. This may or may not worry you.

i think you mean xbox 360, which is PS3's direct competition.

    • yes, 360 would be the one I'm thinking aboutjohnnnnyh

if this is ultimately for your son, go with xbox360

  • Bluejam0

i'd go with the PS3, especially if your son uses his PSP alot.

ultimately the xbox360 is designed to fail. it has built into its design the ability to break down in an unspoken amount of time.

the ps3 is a silent beast. it can run forwhat seems endless hours and still remains silent and quite cooled down.

the xbox360 can warm up a large room in the winter... run out of heat, just flip on your xxbox360 for some cozy times with your loved ones.

game wise the xbox360 trumps the ps3 in every way. their library is more than triple as large as the ps3 however the machine is designed to fail.

this fail part is surrounded by the dollar sign. meaning the console is expensive, the systems runs everything alla-cart so be prepared to shell out a lot of extra cash for anything and everything not tied into the system.

on the ps3 everything is free, meaning you do not have to pay extra to get online, also you do not need to purchase extra hardware to even make it to online as it is built into the system.

    also ps3 is blu-ray...

the xbox360 still remains in the past with its technology.

the ps3 uses their own version of an online store where new games, add-ons, demos and new releases can be easily downloaded and used on the fly or while its being downloaded. very fun and super easy to use.

the xbox360 has its own store, but a separate hardware plus an online account plus a membership card is needed to achieve online, also you can use netflicks with your xbox360 account.

in terms of the xbox360 failing and breaking down... if you get a red ring with 3 lights blinking over a 3 green light you are still ok. however if you receive 4 red lights in a full ring [the most common error btw] your machine your $400 worth of money is now gone to waste. this may happen within the first 3-6 months after purchasing console.

i still own my very first atari 2600 that my father purchased for me in 1980s and all the games work great. i owned a xbox360 and in 4 months it got the exclusive 4 red lights of instant death.

in the end i spent over $800 on the xbox360 with all its extra equipment and games are not cheap on that machine to then just go and get a ps3 and spend half that amount.

in terms of games... the xbox360 has by far a stronger library selection than the ps3 as ps2 games CAN NOT be played on ps3 systems however ps1 titles can... this closes a huge amount of endless games the ps2 library has under its belt giving the xbox360 a huge leap forward over the ps3.

the ps3 however is a beast compared to the 360 in every way.

i hope you realize to purchase the best system for your son, my recommendation is the SEGA DREAMCAST heavily the best system ever made...

no online anything. strictly dvd games. strictly games.

its all about the games, not the movies it can let you watch....

    :)

right, thanks for that. What's xBox live - do I need that and do I need to pay for it?

  • frost2150

I went through 3 xbox 360's and by the time the 3rd one crapped out I couldn't stand it any more. Made the switch and couldnt be an happier. The only thing I miss for the 360 right now is Left For Dead2 and the new GTA add on. I was missing NETFLIX add on, but PS3 just got that too through online blueray discs.

I got CODMW2 and it is awesome. I suggest buying that when you get ur ps3.

    • wow 3 systems later and puirchasing everything along the way is what $$ amount??epill
    • i wish the ps3 had games like Team Fortress 2 or GTA sandreas...epill

Thanks for all your insight. I shall go away and ponder this further. Appreciate it!

  • epill0

    yes yes and yes...

you will need to purchase an either 1 of 3 different memberships for online. gold, silver and bronze. gold is a 1 year account silver is like 4 months and bronze is 30days i think. also you will need to purchase a device to either gather the ip info from the router or connect directly to it if you do not have wifi.

also you will need to contact a xbox360 retard to help you manage to make it work.

[ON THE PS3 you have online capabilities as soon as you plug it in]

my cousin purchased a xbox360 for his son 1 month ago. they still have yet to get the machine online and my cousin is computer savvy as you or i am.

get pre-pared to shell out some decent cash for getting online whiich is the majority of games that the xbox360 uses to play against a multiple of random online players for each games at once, which is rather fun, but takes time in getting there on the xbox360.

on the ps3 on the online store you can also rent or purchase any and every movie out there.... and you do not need a separate netflicks account to do it...

the ps3 is plug in and everything works rtight there.

the xbox360 if you dont have it you have to go and purchase it separately and xbox360 doest advise you on this...

    meh...

  • d_rek0

Wow... I understand the xbox360's shortcomings as much as the next guy but jeez, this is just outright PS3 Fanboy-fetishism.

Use practical judgement when buying a console much like you would anything else.

    • no its not, i am a gamer plain and simple the 360 is very strong game wise.epill
    • the system is great but fails.
the ps3 is great but lack in quality gaming...

    • it will come down to choice, not fanboy-fetishism as you like to label it...epill

    _
Like PC and neckbeard games - Get an xbox
Like Japanese style games - PS3

also Xbox nickel and dimes you to get it up to the standard of the PS3, gotta pay extra for wireless pads, rechargeable pads, hard drives, wifi networking etc

  • CygnusZero40

Ive had both since launch, it all comes down to which systems exclusive you're more interested in.

Personally I used the PS3 a lot more, in part due to bluray, but there's a ton of great games on it. And now with it being just $300, cant go wrong with it.

  • Mimio0

I would like to have both but I have an xbox. I only play COD though. I only believe what I read in the New York Post.

  • Raniator0

    I've got a PS3. Should I get an Xbox 360?

    I'm kinda digging this:
    http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/xbox-…

But do I really need it?

  • Pixter0

Got a ps3 just because of metal gear solid 4

    • Waste of money for that game. I has 4 hours of gameplay and 9+ of cut scenes.CygnusZero4
  • Sandman_19820

I'd say Xbox 360 purely because his friends own it too but only if he plans to play online against his mates. Although I own a PS3 and think its better than the 360 regarding what you get with it straight out of the box (i.e. wi-fi, free online, bluray, etc) as epill stated earlier.

  • ephix0

i had a 360, swapped it for a wii (didn't mind the loss of $$ value) then bought a ps3. ps3 is by far the one i enjoyed more and got a lot more use out of. but that said, brandelec had a very good point above. your son may just end up being the one that gets more use out of it, and all of his mates have them.

  • PIZZA0

Xbox fucking nickel and dime you every step of the way.
Extra for fucking chargeable controllers, extra for wireless controllers, extra to play DVDs, extra for online, extra for every bit of content in games (Valve fell out with them over this)

  • mg330

I'd go with what more of your friends own. Face it: do you want to be playing MW2 with all your friends and QBN'ers who have a 360? Or do you want to be simultaneously rubbing one out over your headset with your one friend who has a PS3, jerking in the joy of having a blue ray player?
